Marine Ecology Technician

Southampton, United Kingdom University of Southampton Full time
2792024HN

At the University of Southampton, we have an exciting opportunity for a Marine Biology Technician to support our team working on the Convex Seascape Survey project. The Convex Seascape Survey, is a 5-year interdisciplinary, global research programme that seeks to discover how the ocean performs its vital role as the world’s largest carbon sink. The project is funded by Convex Insurance Group Ltd., and is undertaken in association with Blue Marine Foundation, and in collaboration with UK and international partners.

The role

As a technician on this project, you will be working alongside a team of academic staff, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, to deliver high-quality research outputs. You will provide specialist technical support for setting up, maintaining and monitoring laboratory and field experiments, and supporting field surveys of the marine benthos.

This role will be based at the Waterfront Campus within the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, which is easily accessible via direct public transport links and is situated within walking distance of Southampton’s vibrant city centre.

About you

This wide-ranging role will require excellent communication skills and an ability to prioritise and manage tasks within a constantly changing work environment. You will have a skill level equivalent to achievement of HNC, A-Level, NVQ3 in a STEM subject, with proven work experience acquired in a relevant technical support role, including an understanding of analytical processes in the marine sciences. A degree in a scientific discipline and/or experience working in offshore, coastal, or estuarine benthic invertebrates and/or environments will be highly desirable.

Your basic hours will be 35 hours per week, Monday-Friday, but you may be required to work some weekends and bank holidays depending on need.

A full driving licence is an essential requirement for this role, as you will be transporting students, staff, and equipment into the field.

What we can offer you

As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect, and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work.

You will be supported to become proficient in a range of laboratory and field methods for assessing benthic communities, and will experience all aspects of the scientific process.

With a generous holiday allowance as well as additional university closure days, we are committed to supporting our staff and students, and are open to a flexible working approach. All our benefits can be viewed here.
