Job summary

Are you passionate about making a real difference to older people with mental health / dementia related difficulties who require the support of our inpatient service?

Experience of leadership and management of clinical staff Significant knowledge in the assessment /intervention with older people in the NHS Experience of team formulation and neuropsychological assessment for people with dementia Experience of complex clinical risk assessment and management Experience of safeguarding vulnerable and complex older adult presentations including neurodiversity

This role would offer you the opportunity to work across two co-located inpatient units and lead for psychology. You would utilise clinical skills and influence service delivery and patient care models. Working with the ward manager and leadership team you will ensure that the older people inpatient service achieves its key objectives of delivering caring, safe and excellent care.

The post holder will receive supervision from an Older People Consultant Clinical Psychologist and you would join a small number of older people psychologists working in Oxfordshire who meet regularly for supervision and CPD opportunities.

Main duties of the job

Key duties of this role will be:

To provide psychological assessment and intervention for adults with severe and/or complex mental health difficulties in an inpatient setting.

To supervise and support the psychological assessment and therapy provided by Clinical/ Counselling Psychologists and other clinical members of the team who provide psychologically based care and treatment.

To work as part of the inpatient team providing advice and guidance to colleagues as well as to social care and GPs in planning and implementing care plans for patients with psychological care needs.

To work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of local policies and procedures. To exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the inpatient wards.

To utilise research skills, as a requirement of the job, for audit, policy and service development and research.

To propose and implement policy changes which may impact on other professionals working in the inpatient service.

To take delegated leadership in specific area of clinical responsibility.

Job responsibilities

You will be responsible for delivering the systematic provision of a high quality, highly specialist clinical/counselling psychology service to older adults with severe and/or complex mental health disorders and/or Dementia served by the Oxfordshire Older Adult Mental Health Services. Working in specialised older adult inpatient areas, seeing clients individually and in group.

The role will:

Provide psychological assessment and intervention for older adults with severe and/or complex mental health difficulties in an inpatient setting.

Undertake Psychological assessment including neuropsychological assessment where appropriate.

To supervise and support the psychological assessment and therapy provided by Clinical/ Counselling Psychologists and other clinical members of the team who provide psychologically based care and treatment.

To work as part of the inpatient team providing advice and guidance to colleagues as well as to social care and GPs in planning and implementing care plans for patients with psychological care needs.

To provide indirect support to Inpatient staff within in the Older Adult Inpatients services.

To work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of local policies and procedures.

To exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the Older Adult inpatient wards.

To utilise research skills, as a requirement of the job, for audit, policy and service development and research.

Person Specification

Knowledge

Essential

Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health Knowledge of working with complex patients in time-limited therapies

Desirable

Knowledge of the theory and practice of different, specialised psychological therapies and how they are used for patients with severe and complex presentations

Qualifications

Essential

Doctoral level training in Clinical or Counselling psychology, or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996, as accredited by the British Psychological Society, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology HCPC registration or BABCP accreditation

Desirable

Pre-qualification training and qualifications or experience in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology Accreditation with accrediting body such as BABCP, ACAT or SfDBT

Experience

Essential

Extensive experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course with presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity Experience of working with people with severe and/or complex mental health difficulties Experience of working in Mental Health services in an NHS setting working closely with others as part of a multidisciplinary team Experience of offering clinical supervision to other psychological therapists

Desirable

Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts Experience of working as part of a leadership team Experience of line managing other staff
