We are committed to providing flexibility and can offer shift patterns of8am-6pm or 8am - 4pm, Monday Friday.

Main duties of the job

Our pre-op assessments are made through an online system calledSynopsis. Our service provides assessment for a wide variety of surgicalprocedures across the County therefore you will be mentored and supported tolearn the role. Ideally you will have pre-operative assessment experience,however a sound knowledge of both medicine and surgery would be keenlyconsidered. It is an exciting time to join the service with elective surgeriesrecommencing and services being reconfigured to forge forward in meeting thehealthcare needs of our local communities. The service offers a range ofdifferent clinics to maximise learning potential and opportunity to gain newskills such as triage, venepuncture and ECG interpretation. You will workclosely with the Nursing and Anaesthetic team and be supported to achieve yourpre-operative competencies.

Job Summary

Using your clinical experience and skills, youwill work with your team as a named nurse to maintain accountability forassessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within theframework of team nursing.

You will rotate through Pre-op AssessmentCountywide which includes KTC, WRH and the Alex

Role Details

You will ensure the provision of accurate Pre-operative patient information and documentation via Synopsis Conducting holistic clinical assessments of all patients awaiting surgery, making appropriate onward referrals in a timely fashion.

You will communicate effectively with patients, carers and members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team.

You will educate patients and their careers as required where a need has been identified, including information on a adopting a healthier lifestyle and provide health promotion to make every contact count.

Ensuring that all necessary follow up and discharge preparations are in place prior to admission.

Liaising with Consultants and their teams in the event of surgical cancellations.

You will be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness in accordance with PREP requirements and to maintain a professional portfolio with evidence of reflective practice.

Ensuring that own skills are developed and shared with team as appropriate.

You will contribute to research and development programmes within the department.

You will contribute to the setting and monitoring of measurable standards of care and be accountable for maintaining standards.

You will participate in handling complaints in accordance with Trust policy.

You will participate in preceptorship programmes as appropriate and act as a facilitator / mentor / preceptor / role model to less experienced staff.

Providing supervision, support and education to unqualified staff, qualified staff, students and new team members.

You will assist in the training and development of student nurses and health care assistants and complete assessors training as required.

You will show an awareness of budgeting, exercising care and economy in the ordering and use of equipment.

In the absence of a more senior member of staff and as part of your development programme, with support, will be able to undertake clinical / shift management within the department.

You will assist in the assessment of staffing requirements, report problems to the appropriate manager whilst ensuring safe staffing levels and safe practice for the Pre-Operative Assessment service.

Ensuring effective communication and shared learning within your immediate team through utilisation of daily huddles.

Registered Nurse on sub part 1 of the professional register. Experience of working in acute care setting. Evidence of continuing education for more experienced Band 5 nurses in speciality . NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards within 18 months of commencement of post. Ability to undertake Countywide work.
