Main duties of the job

This role is for ophthalmology outpatient cross site services.

This role supports our specialist clinic services within ophthalmic outpatient’s, this may include managing your own specialist clinic and working in our nurse led injection clinics. You will Provide leadership and coordinating duties to support our patients and clinicians, as well as supporting our healthcare assistant conducting various visual assessments, diagnostic tests and imaging specialist clinics.

You may also be required to support our day case services cross site and we encourage rotational working to provide you with development opportunities and experience.

You must have a holistic approach to care for our patients, be responsible for ensuring your patients receive safe, personal and effective care throughout their visit whilst maintaining high standards of care and at times acting as the patients’ advocate.

You will provide senior leadership to the team and support your senior nurse managers.

You will participate in improvements and attend relevant service meetings.

Established in 2003 East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is a large integrated health care organisation providing high quality acute secondary healthcare for the people of East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen.

Our Ophthalmology services are spread across three main sites, the Royal Blackburn and Burnley general hospitals and the St Peters centre Burnley. We also run a peripheral clinic based at Clitheroe community hospital.

We also have a surgical day case unit based at Burnley on the fair hurst wing.

Our outpatient services run Monday to Friday 8am till 17.00 / 18.00

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To deliver SAFE, PERSONAL and EFFECTIVE patient care on a daily basis.

Responsible for providing a range of support to our specialist services within ophthalmic outpatient’s clinics, day case, triage and emergency eye clinic when required.

You should be an expert in all areas of nursing care from patient’s admission to discharge, which facilitates clinical practice development.

You will actively support the unit manager, ensuring the effective running of the unit in their absence. You will provide daily clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and support staff in the delivery of evidence based patient centred care.

You are responsible for ensuring all care is delivered according to Trust policies and procedures. Utilising clinical audit, research, supervision of practice and teaching, they will monitor and improve standards of care by efficient and effective use of resources.
