The Royal Free Community Neurological Conditions Management Team

Location: Based within the Community Neurological Conditions Management Team (CNCMT) at the Royal Free Neurological Rehabilitation Centre (NRC), Edgware Community Hospital, Burnt Oak Broadway, Edgware, HA8 0AD (Outer London allowance).We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced Occupational Therapist to join our Community Neurological Conditions Management Team (CNCMT). The team is highly regarded locally and within the wider neuro community, and provides a range of specialist neurological outpatient (including groups) and community services primarily to Barnet residents.

You will be joining an innovative and dedicated multidisciplinary team and be responsible for the provision of specialist neurological occupational therapy to individuals with a range of neurological conditions who present with complex needs. You will also lead on the management of the occupational therapy team with support from the clinical lead occupational therapist. This position presents an excellent opportunity to further develop your clinical, service development and leadership skills.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic occupational therapist with experience of working with people with neurological conditions. Applicants must demonstrate specialist knowledge, skills and application of current neurological assessment and evidence based interventions. Excellent communication skills, the ability to work well in a team, an interest in the training and supervision of staff and a positive and flexible approach is essential. Car driver is preferred for this community post.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide highly specialist OT assessment and intervention to individual patients with neurological conditions presenting with complex needs.

Ensures adherence to national standards of evidence based clinical practice and develops guidelines when appropriate in collaboration with CNCMT Clinical Lead.

To determine and modify/review goal orientated treatment plans of patients utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options including specialist assessment and techniques such as: standardised cognitive/perceptual assessments, assistive technology, activities of daily living assistive equipment, postural management, complex risk and manual handling assessment and fabrication of thermoplastic/soft/scotch splints.

To establish clinical priority, determine needs and initiate a specialist treatment plan for patients referred for OT using judgement of highly complex facts or situations, which require the analysis, interpretation, and comparison of a range of options.

To record all clinical interventions in accordance with departmental and HCPC guidance using Electronic Patient Records (EPR) system.

To lead the use identified outcome measures as recommended within OT and MDT practice

To accept clinical responsibility for own caseload and the OT team caseload; organising this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.

To participate in and make recommendations as part of planning episodes of care delivered by multi disciplinary team (CNCMT).

To assist the clinical lead in proposing and reviewing changes in practice that impact service in own area of work.

To provide highly specialist advice, teaching and instruction to MDT colleagues within the team regarding OT management of patients with neurological dysfunction, in order to ensure continuity of care.

To provide highly specialist advice, teaching and instruction to patients, relatives and carers to promote understanding of the aims of OT and aspects of intervention use of assistive equipment, individualised rehabilitation programmes, etc.

To ensure that patients have consented to OT interventions in line with the Trust and department ethico-legal policies and the College of Occupational Therapy (COT) Professional Code of Conduct.

Degree/graduate diploma in Occupational Therapy Health Professions Council (HPC) registration Certificated post graduate courses or equivalent in-house training in clinical specialty and management responsibilities taught by experts in their area. Member of the College of Occupational Therapy (COT) and British Association of Occupational Therapy (BAOT)

Member of the COT Specialist Section in Neurological Practice (SSNP)

Substantial under & post-graduate general clinical experience. Significant level of OT experience in relevant clinical area for example working with patients in community settings with physical disabilities, long term conditions, vocational rehabilitation or within neurosciences. Previous experience as an OT Specialist (Band 6). Evidence of CPD in the form of a professional portfolio detailing post-graduate structured, supervised in-service training received/attended Experience teaching/education of colleagues, multidisciplinary team and/or public/carers Team working and ability to work as part of a team Evidence of presentation of own research/project/service development work which informed departmental development Thorough understanding of setting & maintaining clinical standards Thorough understanding of clinical audit Supervision of more junior staff, assistants and/students Evidence of contribution to change within the workplace Understanding of role of OT within current evolving health environment
