Job overview

Trust Fellow in Paediatric Cardiology (ST4+)

Start Date: September 2024

This is an exciting opportunity to gain and extend your clinical experience in Paediatric Cardiology, in one of the leading units in the unique and supportive environment at GOSH.  In the post you will be working within one of the largest and busiest units in the country. GOSH offers exposure to all the cardiac subspecialties including heart failure and transplantation, pulmonary hypertension and inherited cardiovascular diseases.

The post-holder will enjoy a working environment of active training and education and will be encouraged to take an active role in the department’s on-going program of audit and clinical research.  Our clinical fellows will have access to training opportunities in ward-based assessments, consultant supervised training clinic, echocardiography and cardiac catherisation etc.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to work well within a team. The appointee will be part of the on-call 24h rota. They should be competent in managing Paediatric medical emergencies as part of team – Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) or equivalent is desired.

Applicants must have full registration with GMC and meet Key Requirements below.

Key Requirements:

Clinical Fellow: At least 3 years working as a doctor in paediatrics or adult cardiology; experience in neonatology and intensive care is desired and will be valued.

Main duties of the job

Main duties and responsibilities:

The medical team provides the cardiology care and investigations for all the Cardiac Unit patients admitted either as an emergency or from the waiting list. The majority of the work involves the assessment and detailed investigation of congenital cardiac defects. There is a rota allocating individual doctors to in-patient cover (including high dependency unit comprising 8 beds), outpatient clinics (including outreach clinics), non-invasive imaging, invasive investigation and intervention, or liaison with referring clinicians, both within and from outside GOSH.  This will offer varied daily activities within the post.

The Cardiology team assist the CICU team and the surgical team in the post-operative management, particularly of heart failure and arrhythmias and carry out any necessary cardiac investigations, particularly echocardiography, to facilitate management.  The primary responsibility for post-operative care however lies with the CICU and Surgical Teams and a separate rota is in place for middle grade cover on the dedicated cardiac intensive care.

In addition to the clinical care the middle grades are responsible for preparing and presenting the cases at meetings throughout the week. These meetings are the Cardiac Investigation Meeting and the Joint Cardiac Conferences, where cases are presented to the Consultant staff within Cardiac Care services.
