This role is Countywide with the urogynaecology and pessary serviceprovision currently offered across three sites.

Main duties of the job

Provide competent and skilled care of women with Urogynaecological conditions working within an established multidisciplinary team.

Work as a specialist nursing resource within the outpatient setting not simultaneously as a registered nurse member of the clinic staff. Care will be provided under direct and indirect supervision with due regard for local and national guidelines

The Urogynaecology specialist nurse will sit within the Specialist Nurse rota and be available to attend specialist clinics across the county Monday to Friday to ensure Urogynaecology patients needs are met.

Provide effective leadership to more junior staff and to act as a positive role model.

As a member of the gynaecology directorate multidisciplinary team to have responsibility for ensuring assessment of care needs, development and evaluation of programmes of care ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients.

Liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team in primary and secondary and co-ordinate all aspects of care in the best interests of the patient and family.

Contribute to the continuing development of practice to all members of the directorate. Supervise junior staff and to teach qualified and unqualified staff as appropriate.

To act in the best interests of the patient in situations where they are unable to make an informed choice for themselves.

Clinical

With indirect supervision to be responsible for the day-to-daycare of urogynaecological patients visiting the department. Assessment of care needs to include simpleand complex clinical problems of the patient.

Specialist nursing duties may include but are not limited to:

Pre and post operative visiting ofUrogynaecology patients

Management of women with vaginal pessaryincluding audit and database

Ante natal and post-natal visiting asrequested by Obstetric team

Enhance the communication link between primaryand secondary care multidisciplinary team

Assist with patients positioning, andplacement of lines for urodynamic testing.

Carry out simple Urodynamic testing includingreporting of results.

Perform stand-alone flow studies

Perform bladder scanning

Insertion / changing of vaginal pessary forprolapse management

Teaching of Clean intermittent self-catheterisation

Review of conservative management pathways aspart of a planned programme of care

Attendance at monthly MDT meeting

Responsible for the implementation and evaluation of programmes ofcare for the patient whose needs may be predictable or unpredictable and / orunstable and changing to ensure delivery of high standards of care

To attend and complete any courses required by the trust or theBSUGs to ensure safe clinical development and competency

To identify the requirements of the patient needs in elective /emergency situations and have the knowledge and skills to act accordingly

To establish and maintain effective communication with individualsand groups about difficult or complex matters to overcome any problems incommunication and to ensure that appropriate information is shared, and patientneeds are met.

To support and involve patients / clients / carers relatives andliaise with and coordinate other members of the primary and secondary caremultidisciplinary team in the planning and delivery of individualised care.

To be responsible for maintaining patients records within agreedstandards to ensure the care management plan is communicated to patients andother members of the multidisciplinary team.

Adopt a positive approach to infection control, activelycontributing to infection control policy and practice.

2. Management / Leadership

To contribute to the effective use of physical, financial andhuman resources

To provide training when requested to new registered and non-registeredstaff HCAs and student nurses. Toprovide advice and support ensuring safe and effective care and thateducational needs are met.

Contribute to discussion, debate and influence change in practiceunderpinned by research that is evidence based. This will include assisting thelead nurse in development of guidelines and policy with specific reference toendometriosis.

Act as a team leader where appropriate ensuring effective teamworkand promote healthy working relations with support from mentor /trainer.

Monitor and maintain own and others health, safety and security

To work within an ethical framework utilising the NMC code ofconduct, defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of thedepartment, organisation to promote safe and effective evidence-based practiceand contribute to quality improvement.

To understand and take ownership of own training pathway with dueconsideration of the requirements of the BSUG

In the absence of the Lead Urogynaecology nurse when asked to takecharge of an identified area of work and manage the standards of care and dailyresponsibilities, including work allocation, deployment and supervision of juniorstaff to ensure smooth running of the area.

3. Education and Continuing ProfessionalDevelopment

To maintain competency and produce evidence demonstratingcontinued professional development in the role of the specialist nurse forurogynaecology.

To be conversant and comply with trust policies and regulationsensure attendance at trust mandatory training sessions and those deemednecessary to role. To identify with Lead Nurse and Consultant when furthercompetency / development is required.

To participate in personal / career development plan to maintainand develop attitudes, skills and knowledge facilitating personal andprofessional growth to maximise contribution to and quality of servicedelivery.

To support the personal and professional growth of new, registeredand non-registered staff, in order to maximise their contribution to andquality of service delivery.

Toinform the Lead nurse / responsible consultant of staff failing to meet therequired standard of performance, and taking appropriate action where required.
