Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a registered professional. They will work across East Lancashire NHS Trust where multi-professional learning opportunities can be provided. They will support the development and delivery of a specialist multi-level communication skills programme and Advance Care Planning (ACP).

They will act as a role-model for excellent communication and provide expert knowledge/advice and support the delivery of the communication skills strategy.

The post holder will develop, co-ordinate, implement and evaluate communication skills training within ELHT with an ultimate aim of supporting colleagues to gain and develop the skills required to provide safe, personal and effective care and improve patient care and experience.

Working for our organisation

The Communication Skills Team is a small team of dedicated facilitators who are passionate about educating and promoting the importance of good communication skills and how it impacts patient care, those close to them and colleagues. The team will offer training, support and mentorship to the post holder.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  1. Support the development and delivery of communication skills and ACP training to all grades of staff.
  2. Work with the clinical teams to support and promote advance care planning which requires management of sensitive and complex information.
  3. Support clinical staff in undertaking extremely complex and emotive conversations with patients and provide constructive feedback.
  4. Role model the use of effective communication skills to clinical staff and provide tailored information to support effective communication with patients, allowing their needs and wishes are understood and met as far as possible, for example, negotiating a plan of care at end of
    life.
  5. Evaluate the impact of communication with both the patient and staff.
  6. Promote good practice in communication and ACP.
  7. Act as a resource for communication skills and ACP for staff – (eg) support complex and emotional conversations relating to end of life, delivering bad news, managing strong emotions.
  8. Be involved in the continuing development and delivery of specialist training programmes to support the requirements of the ELHT workforce – this includes role modelling, presentation delivery and facilitation of groups.
  9. Maintain accurate records of staff training delivery both formal and informal, requiring data input and analysis, ensuring key staff groups are prioritised for training.
  10. Support the Communication Skills lead in providing verbal and written reports.
  11. Analyse reports complied by others to highlight themes relating to communication and advance care planning and the impact on patient care.
  12. Manage time appropriately to achieve goals set in the Education strategy.
  13. Participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of current and/or new programmes of education and training, specific to communication skills and ACP.
  14. Ensure facilities for training delivery are suitable and meet the requirements of the session
  15. Develop skills in teaching and assessment to meet all learning styles.
  16. Implement policy for own area and propose changes.
  17. Respond to the changing requirements of staff training and be able to provide specialist advice to a wide range of professional services.
  18. Responsible for maintaining stock control and reordering of resources as required.
