Job summary

The successful candidate will be a Consultant Clinical Scientists at Band 8C in Infection & Immunity- Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (H&I), with a particular interest in Clinical Informatics and Clinical Effectiveness.

You will drive innovative method development and quality improvement projects in clinical informatics and clinical effectiveness. You will have a proven track record of driving major changes to service provision. The clinical team now focus on the real added value of clinical service provided in H&I, collaborating with multidisciplinary internal and external stakeholders, leading on the translation of clinical requirements, and delivering on these requirements within the laboratory utilising digital and technological advances. Ensuring clinical adoption and engagement in use of technology. innovative method development in specialist tests but also in Quality Improvement projects in clinical informatics and analytical processes.

Main duties of the job

Provision of analytical, interpretive, and advisory services within the department of H&I for this Trust and CCG/Agencies within Liverpool and other Trusts within the UK, assisting diagnosis, treatment and clinical management of patients, with additional responsibilities for teaching, research and development and training of clinical scientists.

Assist in providing strong and effective leadership and Direction to all teams and individuals within the Department of Histocompatibility &Immunogenetics

2. To be responsible for the performance, monitoring and evaluation of a broad range of complex activities within the sections of the department, particularly service delivery and acceptable turnaround times.

3. To be jointly responsible for monitoring and maintaining the quality of patient results produced. Jointly responsible for maintaining the UKAS and EFI accreditation of the Laboratory and support the standards therein.

4. To initiate and evaluate new techniques and methods, suitable for routine use. Assist in policy setting, development and implementation in the department.

5. To provide medical staff with a clinical technical and scientific service.

6. To participate in the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics consultant clinical scientist rota, providing clinical interpretive and advisory services.

7. To initiate, design and execute funded research and development projects and support clinical trials.

8. To be involved in the training of regionally funded HST (Higher Specialist Oct 2019 Trainees) and trainee clinical scientists within the department.

9. To actively seek external funding to facilitate departmental research and collaborative work with other centres both national and international.

10. To maintain links with industry through development of patentable products in conjunction with NHS Innovations.

11. To actively support the continuing education of all Directorate staff groups.

12. Assist in effective workforce planning and role development in line with service need and local and national trends.

Clinical

1 To provide all Consultants and junior medical staff, in this, other Trusts and Merseyside, North Wales, Chester and 12 dialysis centres, with a timely, highly specialist, clinical scientific and technical service. This requires judgemental skills of a complex nature, to assist in the investigation, diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and understanding of disease, in individual patients. This may include recommendation for further action such as change of treatment or referral and frequently requires urgent advice regarding the management of patients.

2 To participate in the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics consultant clinical scientist rota, assuming independent responsibility on such occasions for the clinical authorisation and issue of reports.

3 To present complex, sensitive or contentious clinical or scientific information to medical and nursing staff and managers within the Trust and other Trusts or PCTs when appropriate, using professional knowledge and experience.

4 To undertake the timely clinical authorisation and reporting of patient clinical test results to clinical staff, frequently requiring urgent interpretation and advice regarding the clinical management of patients, using verbal and/or written communication.

5 To offer specialist scientific and clinical advice concerning patient investigations and results, in highly complex cases when appropriate, using verbal and/or written communication.

6 To give appropriate help and advice to patients when required, concerning sample requirements, testing guidelines etc.

7 To authorise specimen referral to specialist laboratories for assays not performed within our laboratory, involving technical and clinical discussion with the reference laboratory, when required as per business continuity plan.

8 To deal with pathological specimens for analytical purposes, contained and uncontained, when necessary. This may require the use of hazardous chemicals and contact with contaminated equipment. Ensuring these samples are recorded and stored appropriately.

9 To deal with requests by HM Coroner for release of patient samples.

Qualifications

Essential

First Degree or assessed equivalent level of knowledge and expertise. Masters Degree or assessed equivalent level of knowledge and expertise in the speciality of clinical biochemistry. Full Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (MRCPath/FRCPath) as required for Medical Consultant Posts with Pathology or externally assessed as equivalent OR relevant PhD Registered as a clinical scientist with HCPC
