Job summary

This full-time locum post represents an exciting opportunity to work in a busy, dynamic plastic surgery unit. The department comprises of 15 consultant plastic surgeons and two associate specialists, supported by a junior medical grade team of core and specialist trainees, clinical fellows, nurse practitioners and physician's associates. We provide a comprehensive range of sub-specialty expertise and interests, including all aspects of adult upper limb surgery, paediatric hand surgery, paediatric plastic surgery, breast surgery, microsurgery including breast reconstruction, lower limb reconstruction and head & neck reconstruction, skin oncology and melanoma. We operate a hub and spoke model providing outreach services at Croydon, Kingston, Guildford, Haslemere, Roehampton, Sutton and the Nelson Hospital, Wimbledon.

Main duties of the job

This is a 12-month locum position to cover an established member of the plastic surgery microsurgery team at St George's Hospital, providing a reconstruction service covering breast, lower limb, abdominal wall and complex reconstruction. The Breast Unit offers a comprehensive diagnostic service and is co-located with the Southwest London Breast Screening Service. Plastic surgeons are core members of the breast multidisciplinary team and together, we offer a full range of breast reconstruction services.

This represents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team in the delivery of a comprehensive microvascular reconstruction service at St George's Hospital. The post holder will be supporting breast, complex abdominal wall / perineal and lower limb reconstruction.

About us

We provide a tertiary plastic surgery service for Southwest London and Surrey. Complex trauma / lower limb patients are managed closely with trauma and orthopaedics on dedicated wards and are supported by excellent adult and paediatric intensive care unit facilities. There are dedicated in-patient and day-case facilities and a multidisciplinary hand management unit. There are also outpatient and minor ops facilities.

St George's Hospital is a major trauma center and has onsite, comprehensive cardiothoracic, neurological and neurosurgical units. The Plastic Surgery team plays a crucial role by providing emergency and elective reconstructive and long-term care in support of all medical and surgical specialties. The Plastic Surgery unit is one of the busiest in London and applicants will need to demonstrate substantial experience in all aspects of Plastic Surgery, elective and trauma pathology, as well as having the ability to lead within a multi-disciplinary work setup.

The hospital is a provider of cancer services in Southwest London and a key player in the Royal Marsden Partners.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The current job plan comprises elective and emergency work and attracts a 1:13 on-call commitment on the general plastic surgery consultant on-call Rota. The service also runs a 1:13 Consultant of the Week model where normal morning commitments are replaced with ward rounds and trauma cover duties (COW)

The appointee will be encouraged to undertake teaching duties, participate in research activities, and contribute to clinical governance activities of the Plastic Surgery Department. There are ample opportunities within the department for research and many on-going projects, which can be explored and developed.

With the development of the microsurgical service, an increasing amount of work is expected to be delivered by a team of consultants; therefore, a demonstrable ability to work closely with colleagues is essential. The appointee will be expected:

To contribute towards and develop microvascular service in collaboration with colleagues

To contribute towards and facilitate compliance with national standards of care for cancer and trauma To participate in the emergency workload, including liaising with consultant colleagues to provide internal cover for annual and/or sick leave for on call duties; under exceptional circumstances this may require some flexibility in the appointees hours. To participate in a 1:13 consultant of the week model where normal morning commitments are replaced with ward round and trauma activities To have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care. To contribute to the teaching of junior medical staff and medical students. The post holder will also be expected to take an active role in educational supervision for core and specialty surgical trainees
