Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as part of the Christie NHS Foundation Trust in the Surgical Theatre team as a Lead Practice educator with a focus of developing, delivering, and managing education across the theatre department. This is a unique and exciting opportunity under new management to develop a new vision for education within theatres, the postholder will be joined by a new clinical practice educator as their deputy and together make positive change.

As Lead Educator, you must have an excellent knowledge of practice education and current perioperative practice. The postholder must hold an educational qualification or be willing to work towards a post graduate certificate or masters level study.

You must be an Operating Department Practitioner registered with the Health Professions Council (HCPC) or a NMC registered Nurse (Adult). Oncology experience is desirable, however not essential.

You will be required to function effectively as a leader of different peri-operative education projects to compliment the provision of an efficient and high-quality surgical service. You must be organised, have excellent interpersonal and communication skills with experience of supervising a multi-disciplinary team providing the highest standard of perioperative education across a varied project-load.

Main duties of the job

Development, implement, and evaluate education within the perioperative complex.

Working both internal and external partners, representing the workforce in an educational capacity.

To participate in clinical supervision programmes as appropriate and teach and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor to varying staff groups.

To demonstrate leadership skills and experience in the management of the department and provide high level of specialist clinical leadership.

Support the training and development programme initiated by the division to ensure staff members achieve their full potential.

Maximise use of clinical and educational resources, including budget management.

Job responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead in the identification of training and education needs, plan, implement and evaluate educational activities for students, new starters and existing members of the non-medical staff.

Lead the development and implementation of education initiatives in particular the orientation, preceptorship and mentorship programmes for students and new members of staff.

Coordinate, develop and evaluate competency-based programmes for non-medical staff in the directorate.

Utilise coaching and mentoring skills in the development of others, provide support, education and opportunities for development and career guidance by providing regular feedback to staff.

Encourage and develop research awareness and its application to evidence based practice

Attend Divisional and Trust-wide clinical practice development and education meetings and feedback as appropriate.

To act as the departmental representative in course management and curricula development forums by liaising with Higher Educational institutions in order to develop service needs and requirements.

Complete mandatory training as required by the Trust and act as a role model for other staff with regard to their mandatory training needs.

Practice as a professional senior nurse/ODP with competence, confidence, authority and expertise, acting as a credible role model within the professional code of conduct.

Demonstrate expert knowledge and skill in the management of complex and changing healthcare needs of patients; integrating theory and practice supported by research evidence.

To ensure the educational audits are undertaken and appropriate actions taken to ensure the theatres remain a good learning environment.

Is solely accountable for his/her practice and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his/her knowledge and professional competence, thereby raising the profile of Theatres within the Trust.

To work in close collaboration and co-operation with clinical leaders, preceptors and education facilitators, thereby bridging the theory/practice gap within Theatres.

Take lead in creating and coordinating a roster that will work alongside the main roster, for enabling the training and rotation of Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) in different specialities, to maintain their skills, support efficiency in the department and promote retention of staffing.

Professional Responsibilities

Maintain own professional status and ensure that the NMC or HCPC requirements for registration are met and adhered to.

Ensure all relevant nursing policies, procedures and guidelines are adhered to.

Maintain a safe environment for yourself and others, taking reasonable care to avoid injury. Co-operate with the Trust to meet statutory requirements.

Provide statements regarding untoward incidents, as requested by the Senior Nurse

Ensure all staff attend Trust mandatory training annually

Maintain registration and nursing and ODP competencies, and comply with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and HCPC Code of Professional Conduct and related documents.

Clinical Practice and Research

Demonstrate expert knowledge and skill in the management of complex and changing healthcare needs of patients; integrating theory and practice supported by research evidence. Demonstrate skills at interpreting complex clinical information and data, responding to changes promptly and appropriately and developing excellent and compassionate plans of care, following relevant protocols in collaboration with members of the multi-disciplinary team. Ensure that patients interests are fully considered within the contexts of care; and actively participate and support others to participate in clinical decision making. Actively investigate advanced theoretical knowledge and demonstrate creative approaches in integrating theory with practice. Actively participate in quality assurance and risk management initiatives and incorporate into the training needs of their clinical area of responsibility as appropriate. Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation. Demonstrate competency in the use of information technology resources, in particular Patient Records and promote such skills in others. Demonstrate effective communication regarding complex and sensitive information to patients, individuals in the multi-disciplinary team and others.

Leadership and Management

Lead key clinical area and team developments and project work, as discussed and agreed as appropriate with Theatre Manager, and the Lead for Practice Development and Education. Support CPE, Ward Mangers, Lead Nurse: Practice Education & Recruitment, Matrons, and the Divisional Lead for Practice Development and Education in the operational management relating to practice development and education matters. Provide leadership and supervision for junior members of non-medical staff. Lead in developing individuals through appraisal in conjunction with their Mentor/Preceptor/Line Manager. Support junior staff to develop mentoring and appraisal skills Lead the management of change and support others in the process; encourage new ideas and developments. Take responsibility for evaluating the outcome of project work. Act as a credible role model within the professional code of conduct in a manner that respects equality and diversity and strives to encourage this behavior in others Person Specification
