Job summary

An opportunity has arisen in this exciting team for a Band 6 SpecialistSpeech and Language Therapist role to provide effective clinical input into theForensic Outreach Liaison Service (FOLS) team for LD/ASD. The service works across West Yorkshire(Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, Calderdale, Kirklees) and Barnsley. The teamprovides risk assessment, direct therapeutic interventions and supporttransitioning out of secure settings to patients, as well as consultation,advice, supervision and training to relevant services and partners.

SALT is an essential part of FOLS. The neurodiverse population we supportcommonly have communication issues that impact their engagement with criminaljustice services and support they receive. SALT help to understand individualscommunication and advise how we can adapt to meet their need.

Main duties of the job

Experience of working with complex LD, ASD and mental health needs andexperience of working with forensic risk is desirable but enthusiasm for workingwith this client group is essential as well as the ability to be involved in andcommunicate complex formulations. This postwill provide an opportunity for the successful candidate to develop both theirclinical and leadership skills, within the context of secure settings andsupporting the service users into the community, assessments to preventadmission and managing risk in as safe a way as possible in the community andminimizing contact with the criminal justice system. Successful applicants will receive trainingin forensic risk assessment and best practice.

Successfulapplicants will be supported by the Advanced Speech and Language Therapist inthe team and supervise a B4 therapy assistant. Clinical and peer supervision isavailable in the service.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holderwill be required to work as an integral member of the multi-disciplinaryteam, providing specialist speech and language therapry assessment andtreatment for service users in receipt of care from community services. Enabling service users to engage in a rangeof individual and group community based treatment activities. You will be actively involved in thepromotion of Salt and Language therapy within the service area. The post holder will be required to workflexibly to meet the needs of the service and the client group.

Thepost holder will contribute to the leadership and development of the SpecialistLearning Disability Health Team in accordance within local and nationalguidance.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

Post registration experience including in learning disabilities. Documented evidence of continuing professional development. Supervision of staff and / or students.

Desirable

Leadership / first line management experience. Experience of a range of learning disability settings. Supervision of staff and / or students.

Training

Essential

Post graduate Dysphagia training or ability to successfully complete the training within 2 years. Evidence of ongoing training and relevant post graduate courses in communication and dysphagia.

Desirable

Post graduate training relevant to Learning Disability.

Special Knowledge/Skills

Essential

Specialist knowledge and application of Speech & Language Therapy assessments and interventions relevant to learning disability. Extensive clinical practice skills including individual and group work. Understanding of and ability to use appropriate outcome measures. Ability to work autonomously and set own priorities. Ability to analyse professional and ethical issues. Supervisory / appraisal skills. Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance. Ability to organise and respond efficiently to complex information. Computer literacy. Ability to build effective working relationships. Detailed knowledge of clinical governance and its application.

Desirable

Knowledge and understanding of cultural and diversity issues. An understanding of the specific contribution of Speech and Language Therapists in Learning Disability Services.
