ADVANCED MACHINING TECHNICIAN APPRENTICESHIPS (LEVEL 3)

If you’re good at problem solving and like to understand how things are made and work, a Springfields Advanced Apprenticeship in engineering will give you all the skills you need for a first-class career in engineering – with exciting job prospects in a variety of roles that will always be in demand across the industry.

What does an advanced engineering apprenticeship involve?

Apprentices are trained to Level 3 as a Machining Technician to maintain and support mechanical systems within our sophisticated plant. All apprentices study for a BTEC/equivalent technical certificate on day release at the local training provider, with the practical training delivered on site at Springfields in our engineering academy followed by site area training in the working environments.

The first six months gives the foundations, where you’ll learn basic engineering skills including developing skills in bench fitting, measuring, machining - ensuring accuracy to the specifications. This is in preparation to working in a variety of site locations to completing a Machining Technician Apprenticeship including completing a variety of modules covering Plan and prepare sequence for the machining activities. Ensure that the correct tooling, work holding, and materials are used. This applies to conventional complex or CNC complex machining tasks. You will start a specialised training programme over four years and progressing in the final months to show your competency in machining skills to complete your apprenticeship and preparing for your final assessment.

On-the-job training on the plant on site, gaining knowledge and practical skills guided by experienced professionals. The instructors work with you to ensure you have the required development to support you in your work environment on site. The Training Academy have a number of individuals who will support you during your apprenticeship.

What are the areas of development?

Advanced Engineering Apprenticeships are currently offered in the following areas:

Advanced Machining Technician - Interpret technical drawings, patterns, templates and specifications to mark out, machine high-quality complex components using a broad range of processes. For example, internal or external thread cutting, slots and pockets, internal or external under cutting, also profile forms, tapered and eccentric diameters, bored holes, and tee slots. Inspect components produced. Adjust the machining equipment or programme and tooling to ensure components meet quality requirements. role will focus on the Machining Technician apprenticeship route at Westinghouse-Springfields includes a variety of jobs on site working in the workshop alongside other recovery plant working teams, carrying out fault finding/repair, machining fabrication and maintenance jobs for the site.

Advanced Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship Level 3

maintenance – 3 phase supply and motors, wall bay construction project. and control – measurement, and control, transmitters, level pressure, flow and temperature. maintenance Engineering Apprenticeship Level 3 – hydraulics, pneumatics, gaskets and seals, drive systems, use of machining equipment and engineering techniques.

Advanced apprenticeship Fabrication/Welding L3 - Interpret technical drawings, patterns, templates and specifications to mark out, produce and assemble complex fabricated products to meet the required specification and quality requirements. Cutting, drilling, shaping and preparing METAL materials during fabrication activities using manual and power tools, thermal and laser cutting, as required calculating dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments/equipment. Operate thermal joining equipment to join metal parts using a range of appropriate techniques to the standards required by the specifications for the fabrication activity being carried out.

What do I need to apply?

Our four-year apprenticeships are following the national apprenticeship standards and aimed at people with qualifications at GCSE in maths, English and a science grades A-C or 5 -9 or predicted to be at this level or equivalent qualifications.

What happens at the end of the apprenticeship?

Towards the end of your apprenticeship, you will be given the opportunity to apply for a permanent role within engineering or you may decide to take one of our a further technical routes to enhance your qualifications, in Engineering. Once individuals who have achieved the required level of competency and aptitude, the roles included shifts once the Apprentice meet the require competency as the business has a range of shift patterns.

The apprenticeship starts in August 2024.
