The Role

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of IT Services to lead our IT team and drive strategic IT initiatives across the organization. This senior leadership position is responsible for directing, developing, and delivering IT services to meet the institution's evolving needs.

Reporting to the IT and Digital Committee, you will ensure that IT Services are effective, customer-focused, and aligned with both departmental and institution-wide goals. Working collaboratively with university leadership, you will oversee the entire lifecycle of IT services, from development through delivery, ensuring that our IT infrastructure remains resilient, secure, and responsive to future needs.


Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership: Lead and inspire the IT Services team, building an effective, motivated workforce and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Service Excellence: Implement and manage high-quality IT services, using industry standards such as ITIL to establish and maintain Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Strategic Planning & Change Management: Drive strategic planning for IT services, aligning with digital transformation goals, and adapting services to meet evolving needs.
  • Collaborative Governance: Act as a liaison between departmental and institutional IT governance, advocating for divisional needs and contributing to broader university-wide initiatives.
  • Security & Compliance: Ensure that IT services meet security, continuity, and compliance requirements, working with relevant institutional offices to uphold robust security standards.
  • Project Leadership: Lead major IT projects within the institution and participate in broader digital initiatives.
  • Financial Oversight: Manage the IT Services budget, providing regular reporting and ensuring effective financial planning.


About You

We are looking for a strategic IT leader with a strong customer focus, exceptional management skills, and a collaborative approach to stakeholder engagement.


Essential Criteria

  • Advanced knowledge and analytical skills equivalent to a graduate level.
  • Proven experience leading a large or complex IT service, ideally in a research-driven environment.
  • Track record of delivering outstanding customer-focused IT services, with knowledge of IT service frameworks such as ITIL.
  • Strong project and change management skills, with the ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder projects at scale.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to present to senior stakeholders and a talent for explaining technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Proven experience in team management and staff development, with a collaborative approach to leadership.
  • Commitment to staying informed on IT innovations and a track record of leveraging new technology to enhance services.


Desirable Criteria

  • Experience managing IT services in a research or higher education setting.
  • Project Management qualification (e.g., PRINCE2).
  • Higher Education experience
