Introduction
As the key project lead, the Festival Director will work for Summer Events (the operating company) to lead the successful planning, coordination, and delivery of the Brockwell Live and the Lambeth Country Show. Through close collaboration with key shareholders (Superstruct UK, individual event directors and Lambeth Council) and the event’s commercial and operational partners, the Festival Director will be responsible for developing and actioning initiatives and strategies to optimise commercial and operational excellence.
This role demands a self-motivated and seasoned leader with a comprehensive understanding of major events and what is needed to deliver an exceptional audience experience; able to provide effective leadership and mobilise cross-functional teams to achieve the strategic vision and deliver against commercial, operational and financial targets. As such, the candidate must be capable of managing complex stakeholder ecosystems, dynamic budgets and engaging in high level strategic planning, alongside being an expert in operational project management.
Whilst this is a leadership role, you’ll lead by example and will be comfortable jumping into the ‘doing’ where required whilst also knowing when is appropriate to allow space for the team to flourish.
Leadership & delivery of key initiatives and strategic projects
Coordinating key shareholders to develop a 3-5 year strategic business plan that prioritises developing the events to optimise audience experience and commercial results.
As the day-to-day festival lead, coordinate across all functions (to include, but not limited to, teams responsible for content/ talent booking, marketing and communications, production and operations, food, bars, merchandise, brand partnership), ensuring cohesive cross functional working with a focus on driving planning and delivery towards the strategic priorities.
Provide day-to-day leadership for Brockwell Live and the Lambeth Country Show, coordinating all aspects of festival operations, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness.
Ensure robust project management, aligned with a suitable planning roadmap and ensure the teams are working to the correct priorities, on budget and to deadlines.
Ensure team resources and processes are optimised to achieve resilient but efficient outcomes.
Manage key stakeholder relationships, including brand partners, local partners, council representative, councillors and communities; identifying and managing suitable processes for community, resident and council engagement.
Engage closely with Mandy Johnson (Superstruct UK Operations Director) to ensure Superstruct led initiatives and strategies are implemented.
Develop strategy and plans for environmental and social sustainability, and oversee delivery.
Financial Management & Performance Improvement
Collaborate with Finance and Operational Leads from Superstruct and Brockwell Live on the financial side of the multi-year strategic business plan and on annual budget development, management and reporting cycle.
Identify and advise on revenue optimisation opportunities and investment strategies in line strategic objectives and work with Finance and Operational Leads to capture in multi-year business plan and annual P&Ls.
Work closely with Finance Leads to define clear P&L management controls, and manage budget holders to engage with processes.
Report on operational performance and identify and manage budget risk across the whole P&L.
Identify and drive cost efficiencies without compromising operational resilience, safety or fan experience.
Analyse financial performance post events to evaluate successes, failures and opportunities; gather feedback and identify areas of improvement.
Drive initiatives which contribute to long-term festival proposition and commercial and operational excellence.
Work with Finances Leads to ensure compliance with their advice regarding laws and regulations.
Festival Curation, Operations & Organisation
Coordinate with shareholders to support in the ideation and curation of the event from the perspective of the strategic objectives, audience experience, revenue optimisation and cost control.
Act as line manager to your direct reports, within the Brockwell Live Event Management Team.
Drive focuses on customer experience and customer journey through all touch points from buying a ticket to experiencing the festival; drive initiatives and support the team to engage with priorities that ensure a seamless and unforgettable experience throughout.
Oversee customer service engagement and communications, identify and engage processes to improve efficiency of customer service communication and support shareholders with their comms by providing relevant information and guidance.
Oversee and support operations and production, creative and any other operational teams to ensure quality event delivery and audience experience, in line with best practice safety processes and compliance with legal requirements.
Review filing and document sharing processes and identify/ engage appropriate processes to improve current systems.
Run due diligence on operational plans and policies, ensure processes are in place to make certain that plans with an operational output are delivered on the ground.
Act as point of contact for operations and production teams and engage processes to share information and requirements across the functions in a way that ensures the teams are aligned and there is a smooth transition between planning and execution.
Engage processes to drive teams towards customer-centric, data-led decision-making.
Collaborate with Superstruct’s Brand Partnerships team to support them to achieve commercial success and excellent delivery for festival partners.
Experience
- A minimum of 10 years experience in event management, with leadership track-record in delivering major events.
- Experience of festivals or greenfield music sites, ideally in city parks.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate a diverse team to deliver to high levels of quality and consistency.
- Strong communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities and functions, and meet deadlines.
- Good understanding of budgeting processes and experience managing large dynamic revenue and cost budgets throughout the event cycle.
- Working knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework relevant to the events industry.
Work Environment & Direct Reports
- The role reports to Marcus Weedon (Brockwell Live, Operational Lead) as a line report
- The role is full time (5 days a week + on site with weekend working for a large part of May and June).
- The Festival Director will be required to work in the Brockwell Live Office in Shoreditch a minimum of 3 days a week, the Superstruct Office in Holborn for 1 day and may choose to work in a location of their choice for 1 day (e.g. home). Exact days for each location are to be agreed.
The Festival Director will have 1 full-time employed direct report, a junior Event Coordinator; for whom they should support to develop and grow into a more senior role. Additionally, they will have the budget to engage 1 further event coordinator/ junior manager on a 4/5-month contract basis.
