We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Protein Sequencing Team as a Senior Data Scientist to expand the capabilities of our platform from DNA and RNA into protein analysis. As a senior member of this early-phase research team, this individualwill lead the development of analytical methods for nanopore-based protein sequencing experiments, supporting experimental projects across the team from conception to interpretation.

The details
- Reporting to the Associate Director, Protein Sequencing, the Senior Data Scientist will conceive of and develop methods for exploratory analyses on a range of early-phase protein sequencing methods, including deploying signal processing or machine learningalgorithms, identifying ways to iteratively improve the chemistry
- The ability to communicate with experimental scientists to propose a hypothesis, help plan an experiment, provide custom analysis to examine a dataset and refine the hypothesis is crucial, along with a strong understanding of the scientific method
- The role will involve leading the development of the team's codebase and the curation of large and complex datasets
What we are looking for

Essential expertise:

- PhD plus either at least 1-2 years' post-doctoral experience or industrial experience in Life, Physical or Mathematical Sciences (biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or another quantitative field)
- Demonstrated mastery of developing novel toolsets using python to understand complex scientific problems
- Experience visualising and interrogating large datasets using python or R and summarising information clearly and concisely to project stakeholders
- Mastery of applied statistics, signal processing methods and machine learning methods
- Fluency operating in a Linux environment and workflow management (bash-based scripting or snakemake/nextflow, etc.)

Desirable:

- 1-2 years' management, teaching or supervision experience
- A basic understanding of protein biochemistry or proteomics, or a willingness to learn key concepts
- Familiarity with collaborative tools (such as git), and a demonstrated history of collaboration or supporting a project through novel analyses
