Payroll Operations Manager

Remote, United Kingdom Payroll Sorted Full time £38,000 - £44,000 per year

Payroll Sorted is one of the UK's leading payroll bureaus dedicated to supporting accountants and their end-clients. We blend technology, process, and accountability to deliver a consistently high-quality service. Our goal is simple: make payroll easier, faster, and more reliable for every accountant we work with.

We're systems-driven, people-focused, and growing fast, which is why we're looking for a Payroll Operations Manager to take ownership of our operations team and keep everything running smoothly.

What's This Role All About?

This is a hands-on leadership role at the heart of our business. You'll oversee our Payroll Processing and Support teams, ensuring performance, accuracy, and accountability across the board.

Your job is to make sure every payroll gets delivered right, first time, every time, while supporting and developing the people who make that happen.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily running of the payroll operations team
  • Track team performance and make sure output targets are being met
  • Review quality and accuracy before payrolls are finalised
  • Handle escalations and ensure client queries are resolved quickly
  • Lead regular 1-to-1s and coaching sessions with your team
  • Manage holidays, absences, and overtime to maintain cover
  • Share weekly performance updates with senior leadership
  • Identify underperformance early and implement improvement plans
  • Continuously look for ways to improve processes and systems

What We're Looking For:

  • Previous experience managing a payroll operations or bureau team
  • Excellent understanding of end-to-end payroll processes
  • Confident leading people and holding them accountable
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • High attention to detail, but able to balance speed with accuracy
  • Calm under pressure, with great communication and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable using cloud-based systems and reporting tools

What's in It for You?

  • Be part of a fast-growing business that values systems, structure, and people
  • Full autonomy to lead and shape the operations team your way
  • Support from senior leadership who'll back your decisions and ideas
  • Clear progression opportunities as we continue to expand
  • A positive, forward-thinking culture where everyone's voice matter

Who Should Apply?

This role is for someone who:

  • Wants to be the manager and has the confidence to own that space.
  • Thrives in a high-energy, fast-paced environment.
  • Takes pride in their work and strives for excellence every day.
  • Who is data-driven, you make decisions based on facts and back them up with evidence.
  • Is ready to make a real impact and take their career to the next level.

Experience in payroll operations is non-negotiable. You'll need to have led a team within a busy Accountancy Practice or Payroll Bureau, managing multiple clients, complex deadlines, and the pressure that comes with it and you'll need to have thrived in that environment. This role isn't for someone still finding their feet; we're looking for a proven operator who knows what good looks like and how to make it happen. Your payroll and pension knowledge should be second nature, and you'll bring a level of confidence that only comes from years of hands-on experience.

It's a real advantage if you've used BrightPay, as it's our software of choice. It's not essential, but familiarity with BrightPay (and the way bureau-style environments run) will make it much easier to hit the ground running and start making an impact from day one.
