Chair of Environmental Standards Scotland

The Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero and Energy looks

to appoint new Chair of Environmental Standards Scotland (ESS)

The new Chair will lead, support and steer the Board and staff to deliver ESS’ vision that Scotland’s people and nature benefit from a high quality environment and are protected from harm through the application of effective environmental laws.

A critical part of this role is the building of relationships with the Scottish Parliament, the Scottish Ministers and other key stakeholders. As a non-ministerial office, it is important that the Chair can clearly represent the independent views of ESS as a scrutiny body.

A central focus for this role will be the ongoing development of the organisation through formulating and articulating ESS’ strategy and direction. This includes the development of ESS’ second strategic plan, due for Parliamentary consideration by December 2025. This work will include the potential of additional powers, and strengthening ESS’ position and ambition both nationally and internationally.

Applications will close at 5.00pm on Tuesday, 05 November 2024
