As our new Financial Accountant, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring the organization meets the highest regulatory standards.

Role Summary

You will be responsible for leading on the annual accounts, external audit requirements, and ongoing financial reporting across the year. Your expertise will ensure the organization's financial health and stability, while your passion for environmental excellence will drive our mission forward.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead on the preparation of ESS's annual accounts, ensuring compliance with the Scottish Public Finance Manual (SPFM) and other accounting guidelines.
  • Support the development and reporting of ESS's annual budget, working closely with senior management to identify areas for improvement.
  • Liaise with external auditors to ensure a smooth audit process, addressing any queries or concerns promptly.
  • Continuously review and implement opportunities to enhance reporting standards and operational efficiency through process improvements, technology adoption, and staff development.
  • Assess ongoing organizational challenges through finance scoping and profiling, supporting the development of a long-term financial strategy for ESS.
  • Utilize initiative to address novel financial issues and resolve root causes, providing expert guidance to colleagues as needed.
  • Provide timely and accurate financial reporting to the ESS Board, Audit and Risk Committee, and Scottish Government, ensuring all reconciliations and key controls are up-to-date.
Requirements

To succeed in this challenging yet rewarding role, you will need:

  • Excellent understanding and experience of budgeting and financial management processes and reporting.
  • Strong technical accounting skills, with comprehensive experience in compiling year-end financial accounts for external audit and monthly management accounts preparation.
  • Proven ability to work independently, managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills, with evidence of presenting complex information to senior managers.

In addition to a competitive salary of £57,141 per annum, Environmental Standards Scotland contributes £16,553 towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
