Job Title: Lead Pharmacy Technician Procurement

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Lead Pharmacy Technician Procurement to join our team at Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our pharmacy team, you will be responsible for leading the procurement of medicines and supplies, ensuring a safe and effective service for our patients.

About the Role

The successful candidate will have a strong background in pharmacy procurement, with experience in managing pharmacy technicians and support staff. You will be responsible for leading the procurement team, ensuring that all procurement activities are carried out in accordance with Trust policies and procedures. You will also be responsible for managing the dispensary services, providing direction to all grades of staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, assistant technical officers, student technicians and pre-registration pharmacists/technicians.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Lead the procurement team, ensuring that all procurement activities are carried out in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
  2. Manage the dispensary services, providing direction to all grades of staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, assistant technical officers, student technicians and pre-registration pharmacists/technicians.
  3. Develop and implement procurement strategies to ensure a safe and effective service for our patients.
  4. Collaborate with other departments to ensure that procurement activities are aligned with Trust objectives.
  5. Provide technical leadership on procurement in collaboration with the procurement team (Technicians and Pharmacist) across all sites.
  6. Lead on reporting of key performance indicators for procurement which will be to the Chief Technician on a quarterly basis.
  7. Manage the procurement services for the MPFT Pharmacy, to ensure a prompt, efficient and accurate supply service (e.g. Purchase orders, budgetary expenditures and deliveries).
  8. Effectively communicate with pharmaceutical wholesalers, manufacturers, homecare companies and external agencies e.g. CMU, regarding the safe, efficient and cost-effective procurement and supply of medicines.
  9. Communicate with pharmacy staff, other healthcare professionals and external customers on wide range of queries relating to procurement of medicines and homecare including changes to contracts availability and cost of medicines (including controlled drugs, unlicensed medicines and specials) and supply issues or delays.
  10. Attend and participate in regional pharmacy procurement meetings and adjudication meetings regarding the tendering of medicines and services.
  11. Lead the local dispensary team in providing a range of pharmacy medicines supply and advice services.
  12. Work collaboratively with other Dispensary Managers to promote a safe and effective service.
  13. Perform the role of an experienced, registered pharmacy technician including the provision of advice, supervision, mentoring with staff members under their direct line management (all technical staff).
  14. Manage the dispensary services by providing direction to all grades of staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, assistant technical officers, student technicians and pre-registration pharmacists/technicians whilst they are assigned to the dispensary.
  15. Contribute to the review of dispensary services, to improve efficiency and establish greater integration with Trust services.
  16. Support the training and assessment of staff within dispensary services.
  17. Oversee the management of all technical dispensary staff.
  18. Support the development of clinical technician pharmacy services for the MPFT Pharmacy Department in conjunction with the Chief Technicians.
  19. Provide assurance that the Royal Pharmaceutical Society for hospital pharmacy standards are adhered to.
  20. Develop key performance indicators for feedback to the senior pharmacy team on efficiencies in procurement.
  21. Refer when appropriate to the Procurement Pharmacist, clinical pharmacist or Deputy Director of Pharmacy all matters relating to medicines procurement that require professional advice or decision making from a pharmacist.
  22. Participate in the pharmacy service out-of hours provision.
  23. Embrace the Trust values and act as a positive role model for other members of the pharmacy team.
  24. Comply with the standing financial instructions for all financial activity undertaken within the pharmacy.
  25. Authorised signatory for the department for invoicing, off contract claims and credits.
  26. Support the operational delivery of the clozapine service and to liaise with stakeholders as needed.
Person Specification

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced pharmacy technician with a strong background in procurement. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical technical procedures for specialist area to degree or equivalent level acquired through training, NVQ3, BTEC in pharmaceutical science or equivalent.
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in pharmacy procurement, with experience in managing pharmacy technicians and support staff. You will be responsible for leading the procurement team, ensuring that all procurement activities are carried out in accordance with Trust policies and procedures. You will also be responsible for managing the dispensary services, providing direction to all grades of staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, assistant technical officers, student technicians and pre-registration pharmacists/technicians.
