Position Overview

The Oncology Nursing Specialist plays a vital role in delivering exceptional, patient-focused care to individuals in North Derbyshire impacted by cancer, supporting them throughout their treatment journey.

This position is based in the advanced NGS Macmillan Unit, designed to exceed the standards of the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark.

We invite applications from dedicated nurses with a passion for oncology care, particularly those eager to enhance their skills through chemotherapy training.

Full-time positions are available, and we also welcome applications from newly qualified nurses or those seeking part-time opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

We seek a candidate with outstanding communication abilities and a commitment to providing exemplary service in oncology nursing. The successful candidate will possess extensive experience in caring for cancer patients and a solid understanding of cancer treatment modalities.

While proficiency in chemotherapy theory and administration, evidenced by a SACT passport, is preferred, candidates willing to undertake this training will also be considered.

Essential skills include venepuncture, cannulation, and the management of central venous access devices such as PICC lines, Hickman lines, and implanted ports. Collaboration with the existing oncology team and coordination with the broader cancer care workforce is crucial to ensure high-quality services for all patients.

Job Duties

  • Adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct while performing nursing duties within the chemotherapy service in the NGS Macmillan Unit.
  • Collaborate with senior staff to deliver personalized nursing care.
  • Assist the team in achieving chemotherapy service goals, ensuring the safe handling, administration, and disposal of anti-cancer therapies for patients undergoing treatment.
  • Employ a holistic, patient-centered approach to support patients and their families throughout the cancer journey.
  • Completion of the UKONS SACT passport or equivalent anti-cancer therapy training is essential.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in nurse-led interventions, including venepuncture, cannulation, and management of Central Venous Access devices.

Qualifications and Training

Essential Requirements

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN) qualification.
  • Current NMC professional registration.
  • Competence in managing Central Venous Access Devices, including Hickman Lines, PICC lines, and skills in cannulation/venepuncture.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) Passport or equivalent training.
  • Advanced Communication course or similar qualification.
  • Mentorship qualification.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficiency in nurse-led interventions such as venepuncture, cannulation, and management of Central Venous Access devices.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload effectively.
  • A genuine passion for working with patients affected by cancer.

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of extravasation and anaphylaxis.
  • Understanding of current issues in cancer care.
  • Familiarity with Haematology, Oncology, and the needs of cancer patients.
  • Awareness of the side effects of anti-cancer therapies.
  • Knowledge of chemotherapy and anti-cancer medications.
  • Understanding of managing infusion-related reactions and extravasation.

Experience

Essential Experience

  • Experience in a cancer care setting or chemotherapy department, or within an acute hospital environment.
  • Familiarity with nursing processes, including assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in a nurse-led environment.
  • Ability to manage exposure to bereavement and challenging interactions with patients and families.
