Position Overview

We are looking for a dedicated Oncology Clinical Nurse Consultant to join our esteemed team at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This role involves a comprehensive engagement in the delivery of systemic anti-cancer therapies within a cutting-edge clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer systemic anti-cancer therapies in accordance with established national and local protocols.
  • Provide specialized clinical care within a designated patient population, ensuring a patient-centered approach that aligns with Trust policies and national standards.
  • Operate autonomously while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team (MDT) to manage referrals and coordinate chemotherapy pathways effectively.
  • Maintain ongoing responsibility for assessing patient care needs, developing, implementing, and evaluating care plans, and establishing care standards.
  • Collaborate actively with health and social care professionals across various levels of care to ensure comprehensive patient support.
  • Offer expert guidance, support, and education to patients, their families, and healthcare colleagues within the specialty.
  • Conduct nurse-led consultations and manage a nurse-led service within the chemotherapy unit, performing holistic assessments and making clinical decisions regarding treatment eligibility.
  • In the absence of the Lead Chemotherapy CNS, oversee the daily operations of the chemotherapy unit and the broader clinical environment.

Main Duties

  • Evaluate, plan, implement, and assess patient care and treatment utilizing advanced clinical expertise.
  • Conduct clinical assessments and make treatment decisions within established guidelines and protocols.
  • Employ advanced communication skills to convey complex and sensitive information to patients and their families.
  • Facilitate effective discharge planning as necessary.
  • Perform clinical procedures, ensuring informed consent is obtained in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Prioritize quality in practice by delivering evidence-based, individualized care through comprehensive needs assessments.
  • Stay informed about current trends in the specialty to ensure adherence to evidence-based practices.
  • Act as a non-medical prescriber.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance in your area of expertise, serving as a role model for nursing staff.
  • Communicate relevant information effectively with other members of the MDT as required.
  • Lead the coordination of patient pathways, ensuring patients are kept informed throughout their care journey.
  • Receive supervision regarding clinical care and outcomes.
  • Create patient information materials to support the guidance provided.
  • Educate patients and their caregivers.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Registered General Nurse (1st level RGN).
  • Relevant degree or equivalent experience.
  • Specialty-related training at degree level.
  • Completion of a mentor/assessor course.
  • Successful completion of the UKONS SACT passport.

Desirable:

  • Teaching and assessing qualification.
  • Non-medical prescriber (or willingness to pursue).
  • Advanced communication training.
  • Sage and Thyme training.

Experience

Essential:

  • Significant post-registration experience, with a minimum of two years in a specialized area.

  • Experience in quality assurance activities.
