Kenya Pastoral Iron Age Society Scholars

**Investigate the Pastoral Iron Age Societies of Kenya**
We invite applications from highly motivated PhD students to join our research team at the University of Cambridge. This exciting project, funded by a UKRI Frontier Research Grant, aims to shed new light on the origins and evolution of Pastoral Iron Age societies in north-central Kenya through integrated analysis of human and livestock mobility, dietary practices, exchange networks, and responses to climate change.
**Project Overview**
The LHEAAPS project is an interdisciplinary research endeavour that combines innovative approaches from bioarchaeology, archaeology, and materials sciences to reconstruct the scale, orientation, and extent of past exchange networks. Our team is led by Professor Paul Lane, with co-supervision by Dr Tamsin O'Connell and Professor Marcos Mártinon-Torres. The project has a strong base in Kenya, where much of the research will be carried out, in collaboration with local partners.
**PhD Student Responsibilities**
As a PhD student on this project, you will conduct original research under the guidance of our supervisors, contributing to the development of new knowledge on Pastoral Iron Age societies. You will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, and participate in workshops and conferences to share your findings.
**Eligibility Criteria**
To be considered for this position, you must hold a Master's degree in archaeology or a related field, with specialisation in one or more of the following areas: Holocene archaeology of sub-Saharan Africa, zooarchaeology, bioarchaeology, or archaeological materials sciences. You should also have relevant linguistic skills in Swahili or Maa or demonstrate a willingness to acquire these skills during the PhD program. Additionally, you must be willing to participate in fieldwork in Kenya and spend extended periods abroad working on data collection and analysis.
