About the Role

The Department for Science, Innovation & Technology is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our Parliamentary Unit as an Assistant Parliamentary Clerk. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of the department, supporting the Ministerial Private Office and providing high-quality advice and support to officials and Ministers in both Houses of Parliament.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Parliamentary Clerk and Deputy Parliamentary Clerk in providing timely and accurate advice and support to officials and Ministers in both Houses of Parliament.
  • Lead the written parliamentary questions process, ensuring that responses are accurate and meet the required deadlines.
  • Manage the administration of parliamentary activities, including laying and depositing of papers, mailbox management, and organizing parliamentary passes.
  • Build strong and effective working relationships with Ministerial offices, Special Advisors, press office, other government department Parliamentary Branches, Leader's Office, clerks, and officials in both Houses of Parliament.
  • Contribute to creating a positive and inclusive team culture, demonstrating an interest in policy developments and current events, and able to assess the likely impact on parliamentary business.

Requirements

  • A strong interest in learning more about Ministers, Parliament, and government policy.
  • Strong organizational skills and experience of working at pace.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and the experience or potential to lead others in a challenging environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Good time-management and ability to support and collaborate with others to meet challenging deadlines.

Working Arrangements

The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
