The Parliamentary and Correspondence Team is a dynamic and inclusive group, closely associated with the Cabinet Office Ministerial Private Offices. Our mission is to oversee the Cabinet Office's interactions with Parliament and the public.
Ministerial Private Offices, along with the Parliamentary and Correspondence Team (PCT), assist Cabinet Office Ministers in achieving their policy goals and fulfilling their manifesto promises. This entails delivering timely and high-quality policy guidance, communicating ministerial decisions to the department, organizing ministerial schedules, and addressing ministerial correspondence, Parliamentary Questions, and a comprehensive range of parliamentary activities (including debates, legislation, and select committee matters).
Role Description
The Correspondence Drafter position presents an exceptional opportunity to engage at the core of Government and manage casework across various Cabinet Office policy matters.
The selected candidate will join the Correspondence Branch, tasked with managing written communications from Parliamentarians, stakeholders, and the public. This role involves collaborating with relevant policy teams within the Cabinet Office and other Government departments to craft responses. The ability of MPs to address constituent cases and other matters directly with the Government is a vital aspect of the democratic process, emphasizing the accountability of Ministers to both Parliament and the public. Consequently, we maintain ambitious targets and uphold high standards for the quality and promptness of all correspondence replies.
Adaptability is essential when collaborating with the Parliamentary and Correspondence Team to ensure timely responses to all inquiries. Additionally, liaising with policy teams across the department is crucial to meet our deadlines. Our team is resourced flexibly to align with current departmental requirements, providing team members with regular opportunities to acquire new skills and enhance their understanding of the department.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Collaborating with policy teams, other Government departments, and private offices to draft high-quality responses to ministerial and public correspondence.
- Overseeing the progression of casework to ensure replies are dispatched within the established Cabinet Office timeframe of 15-20 working days.
- Accurately logging, processing, and tracking casework through our online case management system.
- Keeping the broader Parliamentary and Correspondence team informed about policy areas pertinent to ongoing casework.
Effective time management is critical to successfully advancing casework in accordance with our ambitious targets. The Cabinet Office plays a pivotal role in coordinating Government operations across Whitehall, necessitating the establishment of positive working relationships with a diverse range of teams and other Government Departments.
Candidate Profile
Ideal candidates should possess:
- Strong writing skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Proactivity and the ability to manage time efficiently.
- A capacity to deliver results swiftly while handling multiple cases simultaneously.
- An awareness of policy developments and the ability to evaluate their potential impact on casework.
- Confidence in fostering positive working relationships with various teams and other Government departments.
Essential Skills:
- Exceptional written English and communication abilities, including precise grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Proficiency in MS Office systems and Google Apps.
Desirable Attributes:

Additional Information:
At least 60% of your working hours should be spent at your primary workplace. Attendance at other locations for official duties will also contribute to this requirement.
