Job Description

Job Title: Public Affairs Executive

Reports to: Director of Public Affairs

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Public Affairs Executive to join our team at the Betting and Gaming Council. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of our public policy strategy and parliamentary engagement plan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Parliamentary and Public Affairs:
    • Work with the Director of Public Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs Manager to help deliver the BGC public policy strategy and parliamentary engagement plan;
    • Assist with drafting public policy responses to Select Committee and Government consultation responses;
    • Assist with delivering key BGC messaging and priorities, including assisting with the drafting of letters and briefings to inform and influence Government, Parliament and other external stakeholders;
    • Ensure timely political and stakeholder monitoring, including relevant parliamentary debates and identifying, prioritising and acting on issues that affect our members;
    • Assist with the development and maintenance of an accurate stakeholder database;
    • Assist with the production of clear reports and updates to senior management and members as necessary;
    • Assist with the development and production an annual ESG impact report for the BGC;
    • As directed, assist with and lead when necessary BGC membership groups relating to public affairs, including occasionally chairing meetings where appropriate, ensuring content and materials are prepared, producing agendas, and ensuring accurate minutes are produced, shared and filed;
    • As required and directed by the Director of Public Affairs, assist with the delivery of BGC's work to achieve its strategic objectives;
    • Assist with the creation and delivery of internal and membership content to ensure the effective communication of BGC's work for members;
    • Assist with BGC campaigns and events, including key annual initiatives such as the Grand National Charity Bet, Parliamentary Receptions, Safer Gambling Week, the AGM and assist with following up stakeholder contacts as necessary;
    • Assist with the organisation and representation of the BGC at events and conferences;
  • External Relations:
    • Help grow the parliamentary and public affairs outreach of the BGC to ensure the development of a positive reputation for our members;
    • As directed, co-ordinate and engage with Government, Parliamentarians and external stakeholders on behalf of the BGC to raise the profile of the BGC and its work on raising standards;
    • Support the Director of Public Affairs and the Parliamentary Affairs Manager in identifying and approaching relevant external stakeholders to advocate BGC policy positions where appropriate;
    • Proactively identify opportunities to build relationships with external stakeholders, including government, officials and industry colleagues;
    • As required and directed, work with external consultants and other contractors to support BGC's public affairs work.
  • Internal Relations:
    • As required, work with others across the BGC team to support the effective delivery of our workstreams and our strategic plan;
    • Work with others to build a strong, supportive and impactful team in the BGC.

Person Specification:

  • Good working knowledge of Parliamentary procedure and policies.
  • Positive, proactive and engaging team player, willing to go the extra mile to help the team deliver its objectives.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to help organise and support a professional monitoring and stakeholder engagement function.
  • Confident and persuasive with different stakeholders, both internal and external;
  • A strong interest in the creation and delivery of public affairs strategic work;
  • Evidence of having worked effectively with stakeholders to deliver results.
  • Adaptable and flexible to changing priorities;
  • Comfortable dealing with complex issues, and willing to learn;
  • Self-motivated and driven to achieve;
  • Attention to detail and commitment to high quality output;
  • Excellent time management skills, to ensure work is managed appropriately and completed to tight deadlines;
  • Excellent organisation skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously, work independently, and balance priorities;
  • Proficient and confident in using business IT systems and software.
