Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a point of contact for Biological Safety, providing specialist advice across the Institute, particularly within research groups and science support teams, on a wide range of health, safety, and compliance topics.
  • Deliver objectives set by the Lead Biological Safety Specialist as part of the delivery of the H&S strategy.
  • Develop and produce written biological safety documentation, including standards, procedures, codes of practice, guidance, arrangements, and training, ensuring that information is kept up to date and reflects changes in operational delivery and legislation.

  • Attend and support Biological Agent and Genetic Modification Safety Committee meetings as required.
  • Participate in Regulatory intervention visits and manage subsequent follow-up actions.
  • Liaise with Containment Level user groups and university partners for the management of activities carried out in laboratories designed to containment level 2, 3, and 4.
  • Provide guidance and support in the event of emergencies and incidents involving biological agents.
  • Lead on incident investigations, ensuring root causes are identified, that lessons are learned, and that appropriate measures are implemented in a timely manner.
  • Coach and support staff to take account of health and safety, including advising research and technical staff on risk assessments for research facilities and projects.
  • Examine new legislation and best practice guidance, providing advice and guidance on practical application to science activities.
  • Support the wider H&S team with communication and consultation on health and safety, running or assisting with campaigns and initiatives for the positive promotion of health, safety, and wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively with other support services to deliver integrated and efficient support.
  • Act as a specialist assessor for biological safety and, in partnership with the compliance team, perform audits, compliance monitoring, inspections, and investigations.
  • Support managers to ensure health and safety compliance in relation to statutory and regulatory requirements, as well as identifying areas for improvement.
  • Support and advise users on health and safety compliance in new labs and refurbishment projects.
  • Lead health and safety-related projects, initiatives, and process improvements, including leading or participating in working groups as required, to contribute to continuous improvement at the Crick.
  • Develop and deliver safety training, support the management of training programs, and records.

About You

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Biological Safety Specialist who embodies and demonstrates our core Crick values: bold, open, and collegial. You will have a minimum of a Biological science degree or other relevant subject or equivalent technical qualification, a minimum Level 3 Health and Safety qualification, and completed Biosafety Practitioner Level 1. You will also have relevant membership of IOSH with the desire to progress to Chartered Membership.

We particularly welcome applications from people who are Minority Ethnic as they are currently underrepresented in the Crick at this level.
