Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join The Francis Crick Institute as a Biological Safety Advisor. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing specialist advice on health, safety, and compliance issues, specifically working with Crick members and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a point of contact for Biological Safety, providing specialist advice across the Institute, particularly within the research groups and science support teams, on a wide range of health, safety, and compliance topics.
  • Deliver objectives set by the Lead Biological Safety Specialist as part of delivery of the H&S strategy.
  • Develop and produce written biological safety documentation relating to: Standards, Procedures, Codes of Practice, Guidance, Arrangements, and Training, ensuring that information is kept up to date and reflects changes in operational delivery and legislation.
  • Review and approve risk assessments, including those on genetic modification and biological agents.
  • Advise on storage, transport, and disposal of biological agents, including GMOs.
  • Attend and support Biological Agent and Genetic Modification Safety Committee meetings as required.
  • Participate in Regulatory intervention visits and manage subsequent follow-up actions.
  • Liaise with Containment Level user groups and university partners for the management of activities carried out in laboratories designed to containment level 2, 3, and 4.
  • Provide guidance and support in the event of emergencies and incidents involving biological agents.
  • Lead on incident investigations ensuring root causes are identified, that lessons are learnt, and that appropriate measures are implemented in a timely manner.
  • Coach and support staff to take account of health and safety, including advising research and technical staff on risk assessments for research facilities and projects.
  • Examine new legislation and best practice guidance, providing advice and guidance on practical application to science activities.
  • Support the wider H&S team with communication and consultation on health and safety. Run or assist with campaigns and initiatives for the positive promotion of health, safety, and wellbeing.
  • To work collaboratively with other support services to deliver integrated and efficient support.
  • Act as a specialist assessor for biological safety and in partnership with the compliance team, perform audits, compliance monitoring, inspections, and investigations.
  • Support managers to ensure health and safety compliance in relation to statutory and regulatory requirements as well as identifying areas for improvement.
  • Support and advise users on health and safety compliance in new labs and refurbishment projects.
  • Lead health and safety-related projects, initiatives, and process improvements, including leading or participating in working groups as required, to contribute to continuous improvement at The Francis Crick Institute.
  • Develop and deliver safety training, support the management of training programmes, and records.

Key Experience and Competencies

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, open, and collegial, in addition to the following:

  • Minimum of a Biological science degree or other relevant subject or equivalent technical qualification.
  • Minimum Level 3 Health and Safety qualification, such as NEBOSH certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Completed Biosafety Practitioner Level 1.
  • Relevant membership of IOSH with the desire to progress to Chartered Membership.
  • Understanding of legislation that applies to biological safety and how these apply to The Francis Crick Institute.
  • Proven experience in a similar Health and Safety role, ideally from within scientific research, universities, or similar environment, including delivering training and leading safety inspections and audits.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of biological safety in a research laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of the specialist health and safety risks associated with research activities.
  • Experience in laboratory hazards, associated controls, and working practices, including chemical, biological, or radiation safety.
  • Knowledge of current health and safety legislation as it applies to a science-based environment.
  • Understand the principal hazards involved in work with biological agents and monitor the undertaking of risk assessments by users, ensuring that necessary controls for managing risks are designed appropriately and implemented effectively.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, with an ability to influence, engage, and build relationships with staff at all levels. To change style and focus when needed, including being supportive and firm but tactful.
  • Strong attention to detail with a proven track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Work effectively as a member of a team but also on own initiative.
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex and fast-paced environment with strong problem-solving skills, with a pragmatic approach to solutions.
  • Be a solution-focused practitioner with a passion about influencing positive safety culture.
  • Experience of using databases and/or spreadsheets, data analysis, and ability to use data to produce meaningful reports.
  • The ability to act with discretion and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Able to work outside normal office hours where required.
  • Excellent oral and written skills, with strong presentation and teaching skills, and an ability to promote a Crick Health, Safety & Wellbeing culture.

Desirable

Qualifications, experience, and competencies:

  • Level 5 Health and Safety Qualification such as, NVQ, NCRQ, or NEBOSH diploma or equivalent qualification.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of technologies utilised in science-based research, e.g. vacuum pressure, radiation, lasers, cryogenics, electricity, chemicals, and biological agents, and containment facilities.
