Job Summary

The Francis Crick Institute is seeking a highly skilled Biological Safety Advisor to join their Health and Safety Team. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for providing specialist advice on biological safety and health, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a point of contact for biological safety and health-related queries, providing expert advice and guidance to staff and stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain written biological safety documentation, including standards, procedures, and guidance.
  • Review and approve risk assessments, including those related to genetic modification and biological agents.
  • Advise on the safe handling, storage, and disposal of biological agents, including GMOs.
  • Participate in Biological Agent and Genetic Modification Safety Committee meetings and provide support as required.
  • Liaise with Containment Level user groups and university partners to ensure effective management of laboratory activities.
  • Provide guidance and support in emergency situations involving biological agents.
  • Lead incident investigations, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Coach and support staff to ensure health and safety compliance, including advising on risk assessments and control measures.
  • Stay up-to-date with new legislation and best practice guidance, providing advice and guidance on practical application.
  • Support the wider Health and Safety team with communication and consultation on health and safety matters.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Biological science degree or equivalent technical qualification.
  • Minimum Level 3 Health and Safety qualification, such as NEBOSH certificate or equivalent.
  • Completed Biosafety Practitioner Level 1.
  • Relevant membership of IOSH with a desire to progress to Chartered Membership.
  • Understanding of legislation relevant to biological safety and its application to the Crick.
  • Proven experience in a similar Health and Safety role, ideally in scientific research, universities, or similar environments.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of biological safety in a research laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of specialist health and safety risks associated with research activities.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence, engage, and build relationships with staff at all levels.
