Job Title: Assistant Team Manager - Rhino Section

We are Chester Zoo, a leading conservation and education charity, and an award-winning visitor attraction.

This is a key role working as part of our professional team, assisting the Team Manager to ensure the highest standards of animal husbandry, welfare and exhibitory are maintained on the Rhino section. A modern, progressive zoo offering opportunities to work with a great team responsible for one of Europe's largest and most diverse Rhino collections.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Team Manager in daily operations, ensuring compliance and high standards of animal care and visitor experience.
  • Manage departmental assets, including routine maintenance and upkeep.
  • Oversee work programming and daily operations of Keepers, Lead Keepers, and voluntary work placements.
  • Conduct one-to-one meetings and performance reviews with staff, promoting training and professional development.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant taxa, best practices, and conservation initiatives.
  • Support Chester Zoo's conservation, research, education, and visitor experience objectives.
  • Represent the zoo externally, promoting its excellent reputation.
Requirements:
  • Experience in people management, including conducting performance reviews and motivating teams.
  • Good understanding of general animal management, including husbandry, training, biology, and key conservation issues.
  • A high level of attention to detail, particularly regarding animal care and enclosure maintenance.
  • Familiarity with health problems and veterinary issues affecting zoo animals.
  • Able to motivate and encourage keeping staff and Voluntary Work Placements.
  • Proficient in animal record keeping, including ZIMS Species 360 software, and Microsoft packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Driving licence preferred.
The Package:
  • Mainly fixed hours, typically 8am to 5pm, with some evening work required occasionally.
  • 40 hours per week, 10 days out of 14 on a rota basis, including weekends and bank holidays, with set days off each week.
  • 33 days annual leave per year.

An estimated salary for this role is £35,000 - £45,000 per annum.
