Senior Health and Safety Professional

We are seeking a highly motivated and capable Health and Safety professional to ensure operational safety for the development, production, and testing of Oxitec's self-limiting insect technologies.
As a Senior Health & Safety Advisor, you will join our dynamic quality team, reporting directly to Oxitec's Compliance Lead, and provide health and safety support to all departments, with a strong level of support to lab-based teams.
You will be responsible for routine safety activities, including writing risk assessments, COSHH assessments, investigating and closing accident and near-miss events. You will also perform internal safety audits to ensure that all staff comply with safety policies and practices.
You will need to use your knowledge and skills to further develop the positive health and safety culture at Oxitec.
Key Responsibilities- Provide Health and Safety Guidance: Strengthen Oxitec's positive health and safety culture by providing guidance to all teams.
- Develop Risk Assessments: Work with teams to prepare risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and standard operating procedures.
- Identify and Mitigate Hazards: Identify potential hazards and determine fit-for-purpose solutions to reduce risks.
- Provide Health and Safety Training: Provide health and safety training to ensure that all team members are up-to-date.
- Ensure Equipment Maintenance: Ensure that H&S critical equipment is maintained and serviced on time.
- Perform Internal Audits: Perform internal health and safety audits to ensure compliance with safety policies and practices.
- Investigate Incidents: Investigate accident and near-miss reports and track the implementation of improvement actions.
- Run Health and Safety Meetings: Run health and safety meetings to ensure that all team members are aware of safety policies and practices.
- Stay Compliant: Keep up to date and ensure compliance with current health and safety legislation.
- Education: A BSc in Biological Sciences or similar.
- Experience: Experience of working in a laboratory is essential.
- Training: IOSH or NEBOSH training is required.
- Skills: Excellent inter-personal skills, the ability to build and develop relationships.
- Personal Qualities: Diligent and organised, with the ability to accurately record data.
- Problem-Solving: A creative approach to problem-solving and the development of applied solutions.
- Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail, with excellent timekeeping standards and responsiveness.

- Communication: Good written English and oral communication skills.
- Technical Skills: Competent in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
