Job Title: Principal Radiation Physicist

Location: UK's Nuclear Powered Submarine Fleet - We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements.

Estimated Salary: £60,000 - £80,000 per annum, depending on experience.

Role Overview:

The Radiation Physics & Shielding team at BAE Systems is responsible for designing and validating radiation shielding for the UK's nuclear powered submarine fleet. This involves working across multiple programmes in different stages of the engineering lifecycle, from designing new shields to conducting radiation metrology on-board during commissioning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervising and conducting analysis and experiments to support system qualification
  • Supporting progression of design optimisation
  • Producing and reviewing radiological safety justifications for proposed design solutions
  • Direct development of in-house toolsets in support of department goals
  • Leading detailed shield design, balancing build requirements alongside system performance requirements

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A relevant STEM degree in Physics/Mathematics/Chemistry/Nuclear Engineering
  • Demonstrable experience of radiation transport codes such as MCNP/MCBEND/Attilla
  • An understanding of radiation physics
  • Experience of radiation safety studies & behaviours
  • Experience of radiation metrology
  • Knowledge of the ALARP principle
