The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the development and strategic direction of Special Operations, ensuring that the team is equipped to deliver and maintain response capabilities in line with local, regional, and national requirements.

The Head of Special Operations will provide visible and empowering leadership to both operational staff and their supporting management team, as well as building and maintaining effective partnerships with other emergency service partners at local, regional, and national levels.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will be responsible for the leadership, management, development, and direction of all Trust special operations response capabilities. This will include providing strategic direction, managing budgets, and ensuring that the team is equipped to respond to emerging situations.

The Head of Special Operations will also be required to undertake on-call duties as a National Interagency Liaison Officer (NILO).

Working for Our Organisation

The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24-hour, 365-day accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport. Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed.

We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Education

Essential Criteria

  • Educated to Masters level (where such a qualification is not held, the post holder will be expected to work towards this level of qualification)
  • Postgraduate diploma in Management Studies or equivalent specialised experience (where such a qualification is not held, the post holder will be expected to work towards this level of qualification)
  • Relevant external training to maintain continuing professional development
  • Holder of National Interagency Liaison Officer (NILO) qualification (where such a qualification is not held, the post holder will be expected to work towards this level of qualification)
  • Qualified to State Registered Paramedic
  • Successful completion of CBRN Provider, Operational and Tactical Command Courses
  • A full UK driving license
  • Registered on the National Blue Light Driving Register (where such a qualification is not held, the post holder will be expected to work towards this level of qualification)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High levels of interpersonal skills including the ability to influence, support, develop, and appraise staff
  • Management, motivation, and team leadership skills
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills – ability to analyse highly complex emerging situations and provide appropriate advice

Desirable Criteria

  • A nationally recognised training qualification
  • A nationally recognised debriefing qualification
  • Ambulance Intervention Team Commander
  • Specialist qualifications associated with the HART Programme
