About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Community Support Specialist to join our team at Leicestershire County Council. As a key member of our organization, you will provide direct support in the home to children and families with complex needs.
Your primary responsibility will be to identify and deliver appropriate evidence-based interventions to families, working with issues of conflict and confrontation and an ability to diffuse difficult situations. You must have experience of providing direct support in the home to children and families with complex needs which may include mental health, offending, substance misuse, domestic violence, and abuse, and/or educational issues.
You will work proactively, persistently, and persuasively with families who may not be willing to engage with services, using a range of techniques that encourage active participation. Your ability to build professional confidence and resilience, good working relationships with families, is crucial to this role.
As a Community Support Specialist, you must also have an understanding of, and commitment to, equality, diversity and inclusion. You will be expected to share and evidence your understanding of these principles as part of the selection process.
This role requires flexibility, and we are keen to support employees to balance their working life with other commitments. The salary for this position is £34,350 - £37,950 per annum (pro rata for part time). Every role within the Council has a defined working style which determines where they can work. The worker category applicable to this post is Field Based Worker.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with families from diverse backgrounds, using a solution-focussed approach to support them in overcoming challenges. You must be able to communicate sensitively and effectively with children and adults, focusing on hearing and capturing the child's voice. About You
- You must have experience of identifying and delivering appropriate evidence-based interventions such as solution-focussed brief therapy, the Freedom Programme, parenting programmes, brief intervention, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy based approaches, motivational interviewing.
- You must have knowledge and awareness of issues which may have an impact on the lives of families such as domestic violence and abuse, mental health difficulties, substance misuse, poverty, housing.
- You must be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds and understand the impact of discrimination on the lives of those from minority ethnic communities and others that experience social exclusion.
- You must have an understanding of 'good enough parenting' and relationship between poverty and social deprivation and be able to hold a compassionate position but still hold protection of children as the priority.
- You must be able to recognise 'cumulative harm' and risk indicators of different forms of harm – sexual, physical, emotional and neglect.
- You must have the ability to build professional confidence and resilience, good working relationships with families, ability to over-come barriers to them engaging, recognising reasons for resistance to change, where tensions can exist.
