Job Summary:

The University of Edinburgh is seeking an experienced Animal Facility Manager to oversee the daily operations of a Bioresearch and Veterinary Services (BVS) animal facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a professional, high-welfare, and legislatively compliant service to researchers and a positive, safe working environment for technical staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a BVS animal facility at the University of Edinburgh, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Provide a high-quality, professional service to researchers, including animal care and welfare, facility maintenance, and technical support.
  • Lead and motivate a team of technical staff to achieve high performance and secure a positive, safe working environment.
  • Develop and implement effective communication strategies to engage with a wide range of staff and researchers at all levels.
  • Manage and maintain complex IT systems, including Microsoft Office, Teams, Excel, and databases.

Requirements:

  • Relevant academic qualifications at degree level, plus relevant experience, or relevant vocational qualifications and significant work experience at a senior grade in an animal facility.
  • Hold a Home Office Personal Licence and have a NACWO qualification.
  • Relevant professional qualifications issued from the Institute of Animal Technology.
  • Well-developed understanding and working knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedure) Act 1986 and Health and Safety legislation.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of managing an animal facility and proven ability to develop and motivate staff.
  • Proven ability to effectively and clearly communicate to a wide variety of staff and researchers at all levels.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of IT systems, including Microsoft Office, Teams, Excel, and databases.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Registered Animal Technician (RAnTech) professional status.
  • Experience in the maintenance of complex transgenic breeding programs.
  • Experience of working at a senior level within a university research environment.
