Position Overview

The Substance Misuse Care Nurse will play a crucial role in the Alcohol Care Team, focusing on the comprehensive evaluation of patients struggling with alcohol-related issues. This position involves gathering detailed insights into patients' physical health, mental well-being, and social circumstances, alongside their alcohol consumption history, to develop tailored care strategies that address their unique requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients presenting with alcohol misuse challenges.
  • Provide guidance and support to emergency department personnel regarding the admission protocols for patients with alcohol-related concerns.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with healthcare professionals across various departments and external organizations to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Develop therapeutic relationships with clients to foster trust and engagement.
  • Screen patients to identify those at risk of alcohol-related health and social complications and implement suitable interventions or referrals.
  • Manage individual cases to offer immediate and ongoing support to patients who may not be ready to engage with community services.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to discuss referrals and patients requiring treatment.
  • Assess the risks posed by patients to themselves and others, taking appropriate actions in line with safeguarding protocols.
  • Educate patients and their families about the harms associated with alcohol and provide brief interventions.
  • Deliver training to Trust staff on screening and brief intervention techniques, contributing to the development of educational programs.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) or Registered General Nurse (RGN) with current NMC registration.
  • Awareness of the importance of a multi-agency approach in care planning for patients with alcohol misuse.

Desirable:

  • Management studies qualification or equivalent.
  • Experience in the substance and alcohol use sector.
  • Training experience in multi-agency collaboration.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential:

  • Clinical expertise in substance use and alcohol withdrawal.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable:

  • Evidence of ongoing training in substance use and public health prevention.
