Position Overview

The Substance Misuse Care Nurse will play a crucial role in the multidisciplinary Alcohol Care Team, dedicated to providing comprehensive care and treatment for individuals grappling with alcohol-related challenges. This position involves evaluating patients' health and social circumstances, along with their alcohol consumption history, to create tailored care strategies that address their unique needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients to gather essential information regarding their physical and mental health, as well as social factors influencing their alcohol use.
  • Collaborate with senior nursing staff to guide emergency department personnel on the admission protocols for patients with alcohol-related concerns.
  • Establish and maintain effective professional relationships with healthcare colleagues within the hospital and external organizations to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Develop therapeutic alliances with clients to foster trust and support.
  • Screen patients to identify those at risk of alcohol-related health issues and implement appropriate interventions or referrals.
  • Manage individual cases to provide immediate and ongoing support for patients who may be resistant to engaging with community services.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to review referrals and discuss the care of frequent service users.
  • Assess and manage the risks posed by patients to themselves and others, adhering to safeguarding protocols.
  • Educate patients and their families about the risks associated with alcohol consumption and provide brief interventions.
  • Deliver training to Trust staff on screening techniques and brief interventions, contributing to the development of educational programs.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) or Registered General Nurse (RGN) with current NMC registration.
  • Desirable qualifications include management studies or alcohol studies certifications.
  • Essential experience in a multi-agency approach to care planning for individuals with alcohol misuse issues.
  • Clinical knowledge of substance use and alcohol withdrawal is required.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with various agencies.
