About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Shop Manager to join our team at St Clare Hospice in Great Dunmow. As a key member of our retail team, you will be responsible for assisting the Shop Manager in leading and managing our charity shop, ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and professionalism in the operational running of the shop.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Shop Manager in leading and managing the shop, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and retail gift aid processing.
  • Maintain the day-to-day running of the shop in the Shop Manager's absence.
  • Maximise profits from the sales of donated stock and new goods for St Clare Hospice.
  • Support the shop team by providing communication, leadership, support, guidance, and direction in all aspects of their work/volunteering.
  • Ensure that all appropriate standards are met, including information governance, data management, Gift Aid Compliance, health and safety, and security.

Our many different services provide patients, their families, and carers, with physical, emotional, social, psychological, and spiritual support, at home, or here at the Hospice.

Person Specification
  • Good level of literacy and numeracy equivalent to GCSE or equivalent grade 4/C (pass) in English Language and Maths.
  • Good organisational skills, including ability to plan and prioritise own workload to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to problem solve and use own initiative.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including customer service skills, ability to deal with the public, liaise with donors, and build effective working relationships with volunteers.
  • Good written communication skills, including ability to brief communications team on events publicity.
  • Team player, and ability to work well as part of a small and wider team.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
  • Demonstrable merchandising and display skills.
  • Ability to handle upset or difficult customers constructively and sensitively.
  • Ability to use own initiative and work independently.
  • Positive, self-motivated, and driven to achieve results.
Desirable
  • Current driving licence and access to vehicle to use for work purposes.
  • Retail, sales, or other commercial experience in a relevant field.
  • Cash handling.
  • Understanding of volunteering and the motivations of volunteers.
  • Confident user of computers and sound knowledge of Word, Excel, and Outlook.
