UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) is a leading research institute focused on addressing global environmental challenges.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Environmental Research Manager to lead our Environmental Pressures and Response, Biodiversity and Land Use, Surface Atmosphere Interactions and Effects, and Hydroclimate Extremes and Resilience Science Areas. The successful candidate will provide scientific leadership and vision, ensuring that our research activity is of the highest quality and has significant impact.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for the Science Area, encompassing 80-100 people, to achieve excellence in scientific research and delivery.
  • Develop business plans for the Science Area, including resource allocation, financial targets, and budgets, to drive growth and innovation.
  • Lead cross-disciplinary approaches to tackle complex environmental challenges, working closely with stakeholders, funders, and customers to represent UKCEH science.
  • Manage project delivery, financial management, and performance, identifying opportunities for improvement and driving change.
  • Represent UKCEH within the wider environmental science community, contributing to high-level discussions and decision-making.
Requirements
  • High-level scientific expertise in environmental research, with the ability to represent UKCEH at the highest level.
  • Proven leadership skills, with experience in directing and motivating teams to deliver outstanding results.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and build strong relationships.
  • A strong track record of managing projects, resources, and finances, with the ability to make informed decisions and drive business growth.
Benefits
  • Estimated annual salary: £65,000 - £75,000 depending on experience.
  • 27 days annual leave, rising to 29 days after five years, plus three days for Christmas closure.
