Position Overview

AtkinsRéalis plays a pivotal role in executing critical defense nuclear initiatives both in the UK and globally. Our comprehensive suite of project services encompasses project management, engineering, and quality assurance.

As a Senior Nuclear Safety Engineer, you will be instrumental in addressing complex nuclear and defense safety challenges while collaborating within multidisciplinary teams. Your Responsibilities:

You will contribute to a variety of significant defense-related programs throughout the UK, which involve:
  • Developing nuclear safety case strategies.
  • Collaborating with project stakeholders to ensure safety-focused designs.
  • Engaging with partners to promote 'Right First Time' outcomes.
  • Conducting safety assessments and analyses.
  • Generating safety documentation and technical reports.
While your primary office location may vary, flexibility in work arrangements is essential as project demands may require on-site engagement.

Key Duties Include:

Your role will encompass providing safety case support throughout the lifecycle of facilities and operations. You will assist clients in managing nuclear safety and ensuring adherence to regulatory conditions. Your technical leadership will typically involve:
  • Conducting Hazard/Fault Identification Studies (e.g., HAZID, HAZOP, FMEA).
  • Performing both Qualitative and Quantitative Hazard Analysis.
  • Executing Radiological Hazard Assessments.
  • Producing Safety Case Reports (e.g., PSR, PCSR).
  • Conducting ALARP Assessments.
  • Supporting Engineering Substantiation activities.
  • Liaising with regulatory bodies (e.g., ONR, DNSR).
  • Developing and reviewing Safety Management Arrangements.
  • Leading Safety Case initiatives and teams.
As a Senior Nuclear Safety Engineer, you will also be expected to:
  • Provide mentorship to junior staff.
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals to support business development.
  • Contribute to safety initiatives.
  • Foster relationships within AtkinsRéalis and with clients and partners.

In addition to excellent communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills, you will also demonstrate:
  • An Honours Degree (or equivalent) in physics, mechanical engineering, or a related field (minimum 2:1).
  • Chartered status or progress towards it.
  • Technical expertise in the Nuclear/Defense sectors, showcasing sound engineering judgment.
  • Exceptional writing skills and attention to detail for producing high-quality technical documentation.
  • Evidence of leadership in technical teams and mentoring of junior staff.
  • A motivation to meet delivery and cost objectives without compromising quality.
  • An awareness of personal technical limitations and a willingness to seek assistance when needed.
  • Eligibility for the necessary level of Security Clearance.
