Position Overview

As a Senior Nuclear Safety Engineer, you will be instrumental in delivering a variety of challenging defence-related programmes throughout the UK. This encompasses the design and construction of new facilities, extending the life of existing structures, ongoing operational support, and decommissioning activities. Your involvement will span all facets of safety case assistance, which includes:
  • Defining the nuclear safety case strategy.
  • Collaborating closely with project stakeholders to ensure a design that prioritizes safety.
  • Engaging with various parties to facilitate effective project delivery.
  • Conducting safety evaluations and analyses.
  • Generating safety documentation and other technical reports.
While your primary office location may vary, flexibility in work arrangements is essential, as project demands may require on-site presence.

Key Responsibilities:

This role involves providing safety case support throughout the lifecycle of a facility or operation. You will assist clients in managing nuclear safety and ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements. Your technical leadership will typically cover:
  • Hazard and Fault Identification Studies (e.g., HAZID, HAZOP, FMEA).
  • Qualitative and Quantitative Hazard Analysis Assessments.
  • Radiological Hazard Evaluations.
  • Production of Safety Case Reports (e.g., PSR, PCSR).
  • ALARP Assessments.
  • Support for Engineering Substantiation efforts.
  • Liaison with regulatory bodies (e.g., ONR, DNSR).
  • Development and assessment of Safety Management Protocols.
  • Leading Safety Case initiatives and teams.
Expectations for the Role:
  • Provide mentorship to junior staff in a technical capacity.
  • Contribute to the preparation of bids and proposals to support business development.
  • Implement and participate in safety initiatives.
  • Establish and nurture relationships within AtkinsRéalis and with clients and partners.

  • Exceptional writing skills, with a keen attention to detail for producing high-quality technical documentation.
  • Evidence of leadership in technical teams and development of junior personnel.
  • Motivated to achieve delivery and cost objectives without compromising quality.
  • Acknowledgment of personal technical limitations and willingness to seek assistance when necessary.
  • Eligibility for obtaining the requisite level of Security Clearance.
