About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to join our team at the International Society for Industrial Ecology. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Engineering or a related field and will contribute to transformative research on the UK's building sector, aiming to work towards zero material extraction, zero carbon, and zero waste.

The project, BuildZero, is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (UK) and will undertake cutting-edge research on the existing building stock in the UK, developing new modelling tools and approaches to characterise it. This includes a physical characterisation of buildings, including material composition, as well as their patterns of use and energy performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To develop new modelling tools and approaches to characterise the existing building stock in the UK;
  • To combine physical characterisation of buildings with their patterns of use and energy performance;
  • To identify and prioritise key interventions in the UK building sector and its supply chain that lead to a faster reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and material demand;
  • To work effectively in interdisciplinary environments and collaborate with industrial and academic partners.

Requirements:

  • A PhD in Engineering or a related field;
  • Motivation to contribute to the impact of the BuildZero research output on climate change mitigation and material circularity;
  • Modelling and analytical skills, experience working with tools of Industrial Ecology, and ability to work in interdisciplinary environments.
