About the Job
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated individual to join our team as a Prison Support Officer at HM Prison & Probation Service. As a key member of our support staff, you will play a vital role in maintaining the smooth operation of our prison facilities.
Job Summary
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about working in a dynamic and challenging environment. You will be responsible for ensuring the secure entry and exit of staff, visitors, and vehicles, as well as carrying out searches and escorting prisoners. You will also be involved in gate duties, control room operations, and reception tasks.
About the Role
As a Prison Support Officer, you will work closely with our experienced team to ensure the safety and security of our facilities. Your duties will include:
- Gate Duties: Ensuring the secure entry and exit of staff, visitors, and vehicles, including searching personnel and vehicles.
- Control Room Operations: Monitoring CCTV, operating the prison radio system, and reporting suspicious activities.
- Reception Tasks: Welcoming visitors, issuing and collecting staff keys and radios, and processing prisoner property and parcels.
- Night Duties: Ensuring cell doors are locked and all prisoners are safely accounted for.
- Driving Duties: Transporting prisoners and their escorts to their destination, as well as collecting mail from the local sorting office.
Your Skills and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. You must also be able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information discreetly.

- A competitive salary of £25,626 per annum, inclusive of 20% unsocial hours working allowance.
- A generous annual leave entitlement of 25 days on appointment, increasing to 30 days after 10 years' service (calculated on a pro-rata basis).
