About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Prison Support Officer to join our team at HM Prison & Probation Service. As a key member of our support staff, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our prison facilities.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks, including gate duties, control room operations, visits, correspondence, night duties, reception, prisoner supervision, food delivery, phone calls, and procedures and protocol. You will work closely with our prison officers and other support staff to ensure the safety and security of our prisoners and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure secure entry and exit of staff, visitors, vehicles
  • Carry out searches of staff, prisoners, visitors, and vehicles
  • Operate the prison radio system and monitor CCTV
  • Welcome visitors on arrival and escort them if needed
  • Monitor and log mail coming into the prison and report any contraband items
  • Lock cell doors and ensure all prisoners are safely accounted for during night shifts
  • Process prisoners' property and parcels coming into the prison
  • Supervise prisoners, exchange clothing and property, and help prison officers escort prisoners around the prison
  • Deliver and collect food trollies or use an electric tug vehicle as needed
  • Transport prisoners and their escorts to their destination
  • Collect mail from the local sorting office and lift heavy sacks
  • Maintain the log of Personal Identification Number (PIN) phone requests from prisoners
  • Complete relevant records and respond appropriately to incidents and emergencies

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A valid driving licence is required for driving duties
  • No qualifications are necessary, but good judgement, common sense, responsibility, and teamwork are essential
  • You must be able to work a rolling shift pattern, including night shifts, evenings, weekends, and Bank/Public holidays
