Senior Laboratory Technician

Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Laboratory Technician to join our team at the University of Birmingham. The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily management of research laboratory facilities, including maintaining and managing laboratory equipment, training users, and operating instrumentation to support research needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and manage laboratory equipment, including spectroscopic equipment and other instrumentation used in chemical synthesis and solid-state chemistry.
- Train users and operate instrumentation to support research needs.
- Manage technical aspects such as administration, ordering, safe disposal of waste, and general safety within the laboratories.
- Implement and monitor compliance with health and safety, Estates, and Laboratory housekeeping matters.
- Support the management of researchers by advising on housekeeping, infrastructure, and Health and Safety (H&S) matters.
- Establish effective working relationships with research groups and academic staff to manage day-to-day activities efficiently.
- Utilize University processes in relation to procurement and maintenance.
Requirements
- Educated to Degree level (or equivalent) in Chemistry or relevant technical qualification, or extensive proven practical experience in a similar role.
- Extensive proven practical experience in a laboratory setting.
- Proven ability to manage research laboratory facilities and maintain laboratory equipment.
- Evidence of literacy and numeracy, with the ability to write clearly and analyze information.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence others.
- Positive service attitude and ability to act as a role model.
- Ability to organize and manage workload flexibly.
- Willingness to undertake training in other activities and skills.
- Ability to instruct and demonstrate laboratory equipment use to staff and students.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision and function as part of a team.
- Knowledge of current H+S policies and ability to uphold them.
- Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010 and commitment to fair treatment of all individuals.
Working Context
This role requires proven specialist knowledge of technical, IT, or scientific practices, gained through experience and/or formal qualification. The successful candidate will deploy this knowledge in high-level technical support activities, exercising personal responsibility and initiative to resolve issues with limited guidance.
