Research Opportunity: Ballistic Impact and Polymer Failure

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research team at the University of Nottingham. The successful candidate will work on a collaborative project between the University of Nottingham and the University of Oxford to study the failure under impact of amorphous polymers.

This project aims to produce material models that can be used in computer simulations of ballistic events. The models will contain enough physical understanding of deformation and failure behaviour to provide insight into how processing affects the final response.

The PhD student will be based in Nottingham and will work on building on an existing polymer constitutive model, implementing failure criteria compatible with the model, and validating the material model and failure criteria using experimental data from our project partners in Oxford.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in Engineering, Physics or Materials Science, excellent written and spoken communication skills in English, and interest in properties of polymers, in particular under dynamic loading. Experience with finite element codes and programming is desirable.

As a member of our research team, you will have the opportunity to work on a challenging and exciting project, develop your skills and knowledge, and contribute to the advancement of our understanding of polymer behaviour under dynamic loading.
