PhD Studentship: Exploring the Permanence of Biochar in Carbon Sequestration

Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom University of Nottingham Full time

The University of Nottingham is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join the Biochar Demonstrator project, a UK Research and Innovation £31.5M programme aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meeting the UK's net zero climate target by 2050.

Biochar, a charcoal-like material produced through pyrolysis, has been shown to be a promising tool for carbon sequestration. However, there is still much to be learned about its permanence and the impact of its deployment on ecosystem services.

This PhD studentship will focus on investigating the stability of biochar in soil systems, using a combination of analytical pyrolysis techniques and radiocarbon measurements. The student will work closely with the radiocarbon facility at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) and will have the opportunity to develop a range of research skills, including experimental design, data analysis, and scientific writing.

To be eligible for this studentship, applicants should have a first or upper second-class honours degree in a relevant field and be eligible for home fees. The studentship will provide training opportunities in greenhouse gas removal and the broader societal, economic, and technical aspects of biochar deployment.

For more information, please contact Prof. Colin Snape and Dr. Will Meredith at the University of Nottingham.
