Materials Scientist: Artificial Intelligence for Polycrystal Imaging
1 day ago
At the University of Nottingham, we are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Materials Scientist to work on a project combining artificial intelligence with laser ultrasonics to image polycrystals.
About the ProjectThis research opportunity is based within the Optics and Photonics Research Group at the Faculty of Engineering (FoE), University of Nottingham. Our group conducts cutting-edge research into the development of imaging technology for material characterisation. This exciting project aims to develop machine learning algorithms to extract material elasticity information, phase, and composition from laser ultrasound measurements.
About the RoleWe are looking for a candidate who demonstrates enthusiasm for multidisciplinary research, with a strong background in materials science, physics, mathematics, or computer science. Ideally, the successful applicant will have experience with machine learning and/or crystallography. The role involves both programming and experimentation, so applicants should have an analytical and computational background, as well as the drive to learn how to operate laser ultrasonic inspection systems.
BenefitsThis fully funded studentship includes a minimum tax-free stipend of £19,237 per annum. The funding is competitively available for UK home fee eligible students. We offer a thriving working environment for postgraduate researchers, with access to outstanding facilities and opportunities for training and career development.
Funding and SupportThe Faculty of Engineering provides a supportive community for PGRs, with close collaboration between the Postgraduate Research Society and the Researcher Academy's Training Programme. This includes sessions on paper writing, networking, and career development after the PhD. We welcome candidates from a broad range of disciplines and aim to help students develop their technical and non-technical skills.
