PhD Researcher: Artificial Intelligence for Laser Ultrasonic Polycrystal Characterisation
2 weeks ago
Project Overview
The University of Nottingham is seeking a skilled PhD researcher to contribute to an exciting project that combines state-of-the-art laser ultrasonic imaging techniques with advanced artificial intelligence. The project aims to shortcut the current search process in classifying crystallographic orientation, leveraging machine learning algorithms to extract material elasticity information, phase, and composition from a single set of laser ultrasound measurements.
Research Environment
This opportunity is based within the Optics and Photonics Research Group at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham. The group conducts cutting-edge research into the development of imaging technology for material characterisation. The Faculty of Engineering provides a thriving working environment, fostering a strong sense of community across research disciplines. As part of the project, you will have access to outstanding facilities and the opportunity to collaborate with leading industrial partners.
Requirements
To be eligible, applicants should have a minimum Master's level degree classification of Merit and/or an undergraduate degree of UK 2:1. A background in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, and/or Computer Science is essential, with experience in Machine Learning and/or Crystallography being highly desirable. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an enthusiasm for multidisciplinary research and an analytical and computational background.
Funding and Support
Full funding is available for UK home fee eligible students, including a minimum tax-free stipend of £19,237. Note that the funding associated with this role is awarded via an internal competition and is therefore only confirmed after the admission application is approved.
