Biochar Researcher Position: Soil Health Investigation

Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom University of Nottingham Full time

The University of Nottingham is part of the UK Research and Innovation £31.5M programme in greenhouse gas removal to help the UK meet its net zero climate target by 2050. Biochar is a material produced from heating biomass in the absence of oxygen (pyrolysis). This project is addressing uncertainties concerning the deployment of biochar in the UK through implementing a comprehensive demonstration programme involving arable, grassland and woodland.

To ensure successful biochar deployment onto agricultural land, it's crucial that soil biodiversity is not negatively affected, and long-term maintenance of associated ecosystem functions is guaranteed. Biochar-mediated changes to soil physicochemistry may influence soil biota, but current data are confounded by factors like the type of biochar used and geographical location.

Understanding the effects of biochar application to soils is vital, as the structure and diversity of below-ground food webs regulate plant production and ecosystem resilience, which is increasingly important due to climate change. The PhD studentship will map onto field trials and address the effects of biochar application on soil biota and physicochemistry.

Applicants should hold a first- or upper second-class honours degree in the biological sciences and be eligible for paying home fees. The studentship offers training opportunities in greenhouse gas removal generally and the broader societal, economic, technical aspects of biochar deployment.
